Overview

Our Fire Safety Technicians ensure that every campus facility meets the highest standards of fire protection and life‑safety. Through inspections, system maintenance, hazard identification, and code compliance work, they help create a safer environment for the entire community.

Responsibilities
  • Fire Safety Technician I:
    Under direct supervision, perform skilled and semi-skilled duties for inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of fire safety equipment. Use plans to ensure conformance with fire safety equipment codes and inspect facilities to determine needs for fire safety equipment.
  • Fire Safety Technician II:
    Under general supervision, conduct inspections, tests and consultations to ensure compliance with good safety practices and standards under IFC and IBC, NFPA, and applicable Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health laws for all buildings and facilities. Identify safety hazards and recommend remedies; install, maintain, calibrate, and repair life safety control systems related to fire alarms and protection.
  • Fire Safety Technician III:
    Under general supervision, conduct inspections, tests and consultations to ensure compliance with safety laws for all buildings and facilities; oversee and coordinate engineering drawings, justifications, and estimates for accuracy; modify and maintain complex life safety equipment; provide functional supervision over support staff including other Technicians.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
  • Fire Safety Technician I: High school graduation or equivalent; two years of post-high school training in basic fire prevention skills, or any combination of training and experience in fire prevention; or certified as a Fire Inspector 1 or NICET Certification Level 1 in a Fire Alarm/Protection System; must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Fire Safety Technician II: Two years of experience in electrical or control trade (including apprenticeship); or two years related experience with activities such as project planning, designing, ensuring code compliance, estimating project costs, investigating problems, and recommending actions; or an equivalent combination totaling four years; NICET II in Fire Alarm Systems or NICET 1 in Water Based Fire Protection or NICET 1 in Special Hazards;

    must possess and maintain NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certificates; must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Fire Safety Technician III: Five years of related experience including project planning, designing, ensuring code compliance, estimating project costs, investigating problems, and recommending actions; appropriate certifications such as NICET (sprinkler/alarm); and a valid driver’s license.
