Job Summary
Stain and Paint Technician is a skilled trades professional responsible for preparing surfaces, mixing and applying paints, stains, varnishes, and other finishes to achieve high-quality, durable results. This role requires attention to detail, knowledge of color theory, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities >Clean, scrape, sand, or remove old finishes to prepare surfaces for painting or staining
Prepare paints and stains to match color specifications, using correct ratios and equipment
Apply finishes using brushes, rollers, spray equipment, or other tools, ensuring even coverage and desired texture
Inspect work for defects, rework as needed, and maintain consistent quality across projects
Follow all safety guidelines, use PPE, and maintain a clean, hazard-free work environment
Maintain supplies and equipment, and report shortages or malfunctions
Work with designers, clients, or supervisors to determine color, texture, and finish requirements
Perform small touch-ups, fill holes, or replace damaged materials
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 5-6 years of understanding of paint and stain application techniques
- Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively
- Familiarity with painting equipment (spray guns, mixers, rollers, etc.) and repairs
- Experience in paint, stain, or coating application
- Strong attention to detail and color matching ability
- Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting
- Ability to work in varied environments and follow blueprints or instructions
- Perform pre-booth quality checks on equipment
- Mix and apply paints and stains according to specifications
- Maintain color standards and approve new colors
- Troubleshoot finish/stain issues and improve processes
A Stain and Paint Technician blends technical skill with artistic judgment to deliver professional finishes. The role demands precision, safety awareness, and the ability to adapt to different materials and environments.
