Job Summary

The Library Assistant provides essential support to ensure the efficient daily operations of the library. This role involves assisting patrons with locating and checking out materials, maintaining the organization and cleanliness of library collections, and helping users with basic technology needs, such as computer access and printing.

Work Schedule
  • Approx. 5‑10 hours per week
  • Schedule:

    9 am to 2 pm on Friday or 12:15 pm to 5:15 pm Saturday, and other days as needed
Essential Responsibilities
  • Answers on‑site informational and directional questions in person and on the telephone
  • Assists patrons in circulation related services, such as interlibrary loan requests, reserve books, filling out library applications
  • Examines materials for damage, does minor repairs, and cleans items
  • Assists in sorting and shelving library materials when needed
  • Assists patrons of all ages with logging onto computers; utilizing online resources; and operating Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel
  • Assists patrons of all ages in navigating library online catalog
  • Answers basic reference questions regarding the library's resources
  • Assists patrons of all ages with technology support including access to computers; use of online resources; use of computer software; and use of photocopier, scanner, and fax machine
  • Attends meetings and training sessions
  • Performs security, light cleaning, and straightening tasks necessary to open and close the Library facility
  • Performs a variety of other office management functions
Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus six (6) months of experience working or volunteering in a public or school library; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Deliver quality customer service; accurately process materials and enter data into computer; process and repair books; pay great attention to detail; understand and follow instructions; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; operate standard office equipment, including fax machines, photocopiers and computers using standard word processing and data inquiry software; perform simple mathematical calculations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, organizations, schools, and the general public.
