Overview

This PRN position supports a clinic with regular hours Monday–Friday 8 am–5 pm, no weekends, call or major holidays. We are looking for someone who can work around 16 hours per week. The position will be Level 1, 2, or Senior based on relevant candidate experience.

Role Description

Responsible for accurately performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures for moderate and high complexity laboratory tests. Initiates and follows quality assurance and safety policies, performs specimen collection, trains staff, and may act as primary operator for laboratory instruments. Works within standard operating procedures and adheres to quality guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with phlebotomy and collection of appropriate specimens, ensuring pre‑authorization and consent forms where required.
  • Assists with special procedures such as bone marrow collection.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, testing, reporting, and record maintenance.
  • Performs specimen analysis for all Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology specimens.
  • Maintains and operates laboratory equipment, performing daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance.
  • Adheres to quality control policies, documenting QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Participates in proficiency testing and reports results.
  • Prepares peripheral blood smears and performs complete WBC differential.
  • Performs microscopic examination of urinary sediment.
  • Records results in worksheets and computer system, performing file maintenance and send‑out specimen processing.
  • Identifies and resolves testing discrepancies, documents corrective actions.
  • Maintains documentation for accessioning logs, test reports, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists.
  • Verifies critical results and documents follow‑up.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, prepares reagents and stains, and restocks the laboratory.
  • Sends specimens to reference laboratories as needed and processes incoming orders.
  • Charts patient results in a timely manner.
  • Identifies patients for blood product transfusion and processes specimens per blood bank policy.
  • Trains staff in laboratory procedures and may act as primary instrument operator.
  • Participates in development of new instruments and procedures.
  • Provides laboratory science information to staff.
  • May oversee daily laboratory activities in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Complies with quality assurance standards, OSHA laws, Universal Precaution procedures, and regulatory agency standards.
  • Disposes of hazardous materials properly and maintains a clean working environment.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information.
  • Performs CLIA classified moderate and high complexity testing with minimal supervision.
Qualifications

Level 1

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related health care field.
  • Current state license if required.
  • AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Entry level; lab or phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Licensure and certification requirements depend on the state.

Level 2 (additional to Level 1 requirements)

  • Minimum of three years of experience.

Level Senior (additional to Level 1 and 2 requirements)

  • Minimum of five years of experience.
Physical Demands

Full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, sitting and standing for extended periods, occasional lifting up to 40 lbs, correct vision and hearing, legible handwriting.

Work Environment

Office environment with significant interaction with management, staff, external auditors, and clients. Reasonable accommodations will be provided.
