Pump and Motor Technician I

Job Summary

Perform duties essential to operate and maintain the city’s utility operating systems, including preventive maintenance and repair of pumps and motor controls in the collection system, distribution system, water treatment plant, and water reclamation facility.

Essential Duties and

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance on electric circuits and motor controls at treatment plants, lift stations, and pumping stations.
  • Repair electric circuits, instrumentation and motor controls at treatment plants, lift stations, and pumping stations.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on various industrial equipment including pumps and motors at treatment plants, lift stations, and pumping stations.
  • Repair and maintain electric circuits on city property.
  • Ensure truck has adequate supplies.
  • Maintain assigned truck in proper working condition and keep all work areas clean and organized.
  • Complete required work orders.
  • Perform such other related duties as may be assigned.
  • This role is a city safety‑sensitive or DOT role that will require random drug screening.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience in water and wastewater utility operation, maintenance, or construction, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, with acceptable driving record.
  • Class B CDL or ability to obtain within 1 year.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Basic first aid procedures.
  • Safe operating procedures for equipment and around electricity.
  • Ability to operate various handheld tools.
  • Apply safety standards to prevent hazards and follow instructions.
  • Work effectively with co‑workers.
  • Use standard office equipment including copiers, multi‑line phone systems and computers for basic word processing and data entry.
  • Operate highly technical computer systems related to the work (radios, variable frequency drives, PLCs, control panels).
  • Work effectively with the public in stressful situations.
Work Conditions Physical Demand
  • Must be scheduled for on‑call rotation to respond to emergencies and after‑hour repair needs.
  • Able to sit for periods of time while driving to site locations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and drag and pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, squat, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell.
Environmental Demand
  • Ability to tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Use EH‑rated safety‑toed boots with all tools, equipment, and safety gear (provided).
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments with routine exposure to industrial chemicals; safe handling and transport of equipment in accordance with hazardous materials protocols.
