Position: English Language Learners (ELL)

Job Description

Provide instruction in the curricular area to students in K‑5.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach English Language Learners from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Assess both academic and language proficiency levels.
  • Differentiated instruction in consideration of cultural backgrounds, proficiency levels, and learning styles.
  • Support classroom teachers with appropriate accommodations and strategies to assist the learning of English Learners.
  • Promote and develop opportunities for interaction and integration of ELL and mainstream students.
  • Advocate for the ELL program, students, and families.
  • Attend and participate in District ELL Professional Learning Community and broader Professional Learning Community.
  • Assist the ELL Facilitator in providing professional development for staff.
  • Collaborate with District Community Liaisons to support students and families struggling with language barriers.
  • Collaborate with principal, school counselor, staff, parents, and students on matters pertaining to reading instruction.
  • Maintain appropriate records and protect the confidentiality of data.
  • Meet the 8 Iowa Teaching Standards and 42 criteria on a consistent basis.
  • Report to work as scheduled and reliably.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions

Describe accommodations and expectations regarding performance of essential duties.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education required.
  • ESL endorsement required.
  • Experience teaching K‑5 English Learners.
  • Cultural sensitivity for students from over 20 different countries.
  • Knowledge and experience with Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).
  • Preferred: experience teaching K‑5 grade.
Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, assessment data, professional journals, and regulations; effectively write reports and communications to students, colleagues, parents, and staff; present information orally and respond to questions from administrators, teachers, staff, and students; assist students in language and literacy areas.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals, and fractions; assist students in implementing these mathematical concepts.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve problems effectively and interpret instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Iowa Teaching Certification with an endorsement in the content area required.

Physical Demands

Frequent standing, walking, using hands and fingers to handle objects; squatting, stooping, kneeling; reaching above the head; lifting up to 50 pounds up to 12 feet; other duties may involve pushing/pulling items. Vision requirements include close and color vision.

Work Environment

Quiet classroom setting with opportunities to extend hours beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday. Work may involve indoor and occasional outdoor supervision of students.
