Position TitleInduction Coach
Job GoalThe Induction Coach will support the growth and development of beginning teachers. Each coach will oversee a caseload of first and second‑year teachers, PK‑12, within the Cedar Rapids Community School district. Responsibilities include mentoring, providing professional development in class culture, instructional strategies, classroom management, student work analysis, differentiated instruction, and support for ELL and students with special needs. Coaches use data collection tools and protocols to guide reflection and monitor progress toward professional goals for instructional improvement.
Induction Coaches attend district‑structured professional development throughout the school year, such as monthly coach collaborations, professional learning networks, differentiated coach professional learning communities, and peer coaching.
- Establish and maintain a trusting, confidential, non‑evaluative relationship with teachers to foster professional autonomy
- Demonstrate skillful use of mentor language
- Assist teachers in reflecting on and analyzing practice, reviewing student work and using data to inform instruction and enhance achievement
- Deepen knowledge of equity principles to strengthen teachers’ application of the Iowa Teaching Standards and encourage the use of an equity lens
- Model innovative teaching methodologies, such as co‑teaching and demonstration lessons
- Provide opportunities for teachers to observe exemplary practice through inter‑site visits
- Encourage teachers to identify instructional resources and support across the school community
- Incorporate technology and data analysis to advance teacher learning and classroom practice
- Promote collegiality and build community among new teachers by providing professional development and support initiatives
- Collaborate with building principals and instructional coaches to align coaching activities with district program expectations
- Fully participate in coaching professional development, including district collaborations, professional learning teams, and other identified training that supports induction coaches
- Engage in goal setting, reflection, and continuous growth along a continuum
- Meet or exceed all performance targets established by program leadership
- Maintain and submit required documentation, including weekly coaching logs, coaching data analysis, an up‑to‑date coaching calendar, and accurate time and attendance records
- Demonstrate the highest standards of honesty, integrity, flexibility, and responsiveness
- Establish a flexible work schedule that may extend beyond traditional school hours/days
- Embrace the Mentoring and Induction Theory of Action and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the district’s programs
- Handle information confidentially in accordance with established policies and legal requirements (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.)
- Expertise in designing and implementing standards‑based instruction, assessment, and methods that improve student achievement
- Ability to use innovative teaching methodologies
- Ability to collaborate and maintain confidential relationships with administrators and teachers
- Experience with adult learning (coaching, professional development, mentoring, teaching)
- Commitment to personal and professional growth within a community of practice
- Willingness to engage in formative assessment processes, including non‑evaluative, reflective conversations with teachers using evidence of practice and student learning
- Excellent oral, written, and technology skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency in maintaining and managing regular communication and documentation
- Optimism for teachers’ and schools’ potential to effect student change
- Preferred: experience designing, presenting, and facilitating adult learning experiences
- Preferred: successful teacher leadership experience
- Preferred: active teaching contract with Cedar Rapids Community Schools District
