English Language Learners (ELL) .5 FTE - Washington
Part‑time, 0.5 FTE (4 hours/day) at Cedar Rapids Community School District, Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Job DescriptionProvides instruction to students K‑5 in the curricular area, supporting English Language Learners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Teach English Language Learners from a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
- Assess both academic and language proficiency levels.
- Differentiate instruction in consideration of cultural backgrounds, proficiency levels, and learning styles.
- Support classroom teachers with appropriate accommodations and strategies to assist the learning of English Learners.
- Actively promote and develop opportunities for interaction and integration of ELL and mainstream students.
- Serve as an advocate for the ELL program, students, and families.
- Attend and participate in the District ELL Professional Learning Community.
- Attend and participate in the Professional Learning Community.
- Assist the ELL Facilitator in providing professional development for staff.
- Collaborate with District Community Liaisons to support students and families struggling with language barriers.
- Collaborate with the principal, school counselor, staff, parents, and students on matters pertaining to reading instruction.
- Maintain appropriate records and protect the confidentiality of data.
- Meet the Iowa Teaching Standards and related criteria on a consistent basis.
- Report to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education required.
- ESL endorsement required.
- Experience teaching K‑5 English Learners.
- Cultural sensitivity for students from over 20 different countries.
- Knowledge and experience with Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).
- Preferred experience teaching K‑5.
- ESL Teacher K‑12 experience.
- Strong language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and interpreting educational materials.
- Basic mathematical skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals, and fractions.
- Reasoning ability: solving problems and interpreting instructions.
- Believes that all children can attain high levels of learning.
- Takes responsibility for student learning and personal performance.
- Builds effective educational experiences benefiting all students.
- Applies continuous improvement principles through quality tools and processes.
- Acts as an effective member of the school team.
- Faces educational challenges confidently.
- Utilizes effective interpersonal skills.
- Maintains a track record of success.
- Works with integrity.
- Iowa Teaching Certification with an endorsement in a content area required.
The employee may need to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle objects, talk, and hear. There may be occasional squatting, stooping, kneeling, reaching above the head, lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and moving up to 20 feet. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and color vision.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment is mostly quiet indoor classroom settings, with occasional outdoor supervision. Regular professional working hours are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but employees may need to extend beyond this period. Work may include different areas of the classroom, including desks, floor, standing, and movement while supervising activities.
