Area Coordinator, Residence Life

Mount Mercy University is seeking an enthusiastic, student-focused professional to join our Residence Life team as Area Coordinator. This full-time, live-in position plays a vital role in creating a vibrant residential community that supports student engagement, personal growth, academic success, and retention. Reporting to the Director of Residence Life, the Area Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day management of a residential area serving approximately 450–500 resident students and the direct supervision of approximately 20 Resident Assistants (RAs).

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily operations of assigned residence halls and residential communities.
  • Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate approximately 20 Resident Assistants.
  • Promote student success through community development, educational programming, and student engagement initiatives.
  • Address student concerns and facilitate conflict resolution within residential communities.
  • Assist with student conduct processes and support behavioral intervention efforts.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to student emergencies, crises, and campus incidents.
  • Support housing operations including room assignments, room changes, occupancy management, and opening/closing processes.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to enhance students' residential experience and sense of belonging.
  • Assist with the recruitment, selection, and training of student staff.
  • Support departmental initiatives, assessment efforts, and residence life programming.
  • Serve on university committees and participate in campus-wide events and activities.
  • Contribute to summer operations, orientation programs, and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience working with college students in residence life, student affairs, or a leadership setting.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations and work collaboratively with diverse populations.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet university driving requirements.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience supervising student staff.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, residential education, and conduct administration.
