Adjunct Instructor Of Philosophy

Kirkwood Community College (Cedar Rapids, IA) seeks a skilled and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy for the Fall 2026 semester. Courses of instruction would include Introduction to Ethics with the opportunity to teach other philosophy courses in the future. The courses will be taught asynchronously online.

Adjunct faculty play a vital role in instruction. Adjunct instructors are responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. Adjunct faculty bring with them a variety of backgrounds and professional experiences which serve to foster growth in the subject matter and enrich student learning. Adjunct faculty must evaluate, record, and report student achievement and progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and college policies and procedures.

Must be able to design and participate in assessment of student learning projects within the discipline, the department, and the college.

Adjunct faculty positions are temporary, part-time positions scheduled intermittently based on institutional need. Adjuncts are not guaranteed work in any semester and are notified of course assignments prior to each term as courses become available. Official transcripts will be required if offered a position.

• Provide instruction in discipline.
• Work with other faculty members to develop a course syllabus and consistent assessments.
• Communicate with department staff, students, and faculty on a regular basis.
• Perform other related work duties as assigned.

Position involves working in a classroom setting. Occasional (10-33%) sitting, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) standing, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

• MA in Philosophy or a Master's degree with a minimum of 12 graduate hours in Philosophy

• Experience teaching Ethics
• Demonstrated commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community college
• Demonstrated success in working collaboratively
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills
• Doctorate degree
