About the Role

Principal Systems Safety Engineer – Collins Aerospace. This hybrid position is based in Cedar Rapids, IA, with options to work at Windsor Locks, CT;
Burnsville, MN;
Rockford, IL;
Wilsonville, OR; or Melbourne, FL. Relocation assistance is available.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead critical safety initiatives and serve as a trusted advisor to engineering teams and customers.
  • Execute civil safety assessments according to ARP
    4761 or military safety assessments per MIL-STD‑882E, developing System Safety Program Plans, Functional Hazard Assessments, Fault Tree Analyses, and Safety Assessment Reports.
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software engineering teams to define safety‑critical requirements during development.
  • Review and refine design documentation for safety‑critical systems, providing expert analysis and feedback to ensure the highest safety standards.
  • Mentor and lead less experienced engineers in safety practices, fostering continuous learning.
  • Partner with customers, stakeholders, and organizational leaders to develop plans, solve challenges, and deliver excellence.
  • Travel as needed – approximately 5% of the time.
Mandatory Qualifications
  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Experience in safety‑critical systems and familiarity with ARP
    4761 or MIL-STD‑882E safety standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with ARP
    4754A, DO‑254, DO‑178B/C, and DO‑297 standards.
  • Proficiency with CAFTA or equivalent safety analysis tools, including Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Strong foundation in reliability engineering theory, statistics, and mathematical modeling.
  • Recognized technical expertise in avionics safety with a demonstrated ability to excel in multiple environments.

Salary Range

USD 107,500 – 204,500 per annum.
