About the Role
Principal Systems Safety Engineer – Collins Aerospace. This hybrid position is based in Cedar Rapids, IA, with options to work at Windsor Locks, CT;
Burnsville, MN;
Rockford, IL;
Wilsonville, OR; or Melbourne, FL. Relocation assistance is available.
- Lead critical safety initiatives and serve as a trusted advisor to engineering teams and customers.
- Execute civil safety assessments according to ARP
4761 or military safety assessments per MIL-STD‑882E, developing System Safety Program Plans, Functional Hazard Assessments, Fault Tree Analyses, and Safety Assessment Reports. - Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software engineering teams to define safety‑critical requirements during development.
- Review and refine design documentation for safety‑critical systems, providing expert analysis and feedback to ensure the highest safety standards.
- Mentor and lead less experienced engineers in safety practices, fostering continuous learning.
- Partner with customers, stakeholders, and organizational leaders to develop plans, solve challenges, and deliver excellence.
- Travel as needed – approximately 5% of the time.
- Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Experience in safety‑critical systems and familiarity with ARP
4761 or MIL-STD‑882E safety standards.
- Familiarity with ARP
4754A, DO‑254, DO‑178B/C, and DO‑297 standards. - Proficiency with CAFTA or equivalent safety analysis tools, including Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
- Strong foundation in reliability engineering theory, statistics, and mathematical modeling.
- Recognized technical expertise in avionics safety with a demonstrated ability to excel in multiple environments.
