Skillbridge Intern Position

The SOA CAAS Mainline Platform Systems team within Collins Aerospace is seeking transitioning U.S. military members to join our team through the Department of Defense Skill Bridge Program. Our team supports the Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) integrated flight deck for U.S. Army MH-47 and MH-60 aircraft. As a Skill Bridge intern, you will be embedded with our Platform Systems Engineering team and participate in the design, development, integration, and test of complex military avionics and software capabilities.

Military experience does not always translate directly into civilian job titles. Candidates with aviation, avionics, maintenance, communications, electronics, operations, test, software, cyber, or other technical military backgrounds are encouraged to apply. This is an onsite role located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

What You Will Do:

  • Participate in the capture, decomposition, allocation, and peer review of system requirements.
  • Support requirements traceability and configuration management activities.
  • Develop and peer review test procedures used to verify system requirements.
  • Participate in requirements-based, robustness, integration, and ad hoc testing in an avionics laboratory.
  • Support troubleshooting of system-level integration and test issues.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, test, safety, cybersecurity, airworthiness, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Participate as a member of an Agile development team.
  • Schedule flexibility may occasionally be necessary during formal integration and test activities.

What You Will Learn:

  • Our team understands that transitioning from military service involves more than simply finding a civilian job. Led by a recently retired military leader, this Skill Bridge experience is designed to help translate your military technical, operational, and leadership experience into a civilian aerospace career.
  • You will gain experience with:
  • The systems engineering lifecycle from initial requirements through integration, verification, and support of fielded products.
  • Requirements development, decomposition, allocation, traceability, and verification.
  • Systems integration, troubleshooting, and laboratory testing.
  • Agile aerospace development.
  • Engineering tools including DOORS, JAMA, JIRA, and ALM.
  • Working within a multidisciplinary aerospace engineering organization.
  • You will also have opportunities to engage with engineers and leaders across Collins Aerospace and explore potential post-military career paths.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Active-duty U.S. military service member eligible for the DoD Skill Bridge Program and able to obtain command approval.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work onsite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
  • Interest in pursuing a civilian career in aerospace, systems engineering, integration and test, or a related technical discipline.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience with military aviation, avionics, electronics, communications, aircraft maintenance, mission systems, software, test, or other complex technical systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting technical systems or working with technical documentation and procedures.
  • Familiarity with requirements, integration and test, configuration management, Agile development, or engineering tools.
  • Collaborative attitude, accountability, initiative, effective communication, and a willingness to learn.

A bachelor's degree is not required for Skill Bridge participation. Candidates interested in long-term engineering positions are encouraged to have completed, be pursuing, or be willing to pursue a STEM-related bachelor's degree where required for future employment.

Skill Bridge participation does not guarantee employment following completion of the internship.
