The Environmental Compliance Group is seeking an experienced Principal Systems Engineer to support Avionics certification programs. The candidate is expected to have experience in environmental certification or avionics. This position includes review and approval of certification compliance data, interface with customers, suppliers, and external certification authorities, and hands-on work with engineering teams to provide guidance in the development of and adherence to certification-related processes.

This role will also provide opportunities to become an Environmental Unit Member (UM) in the future.

This role can be worked remotely in the U.S with travel to Cedar Rapids, IA. Candidates who can support onsite work to Cedar Rapids, IA are preferred. Must have passed or be able to pass the TSO Compliance Representative (TCR) application/selection process to be nominated by Avionics Certification and authorized as a compliance approver.

What You Will Do:

  • Serve as a compliance evaluator, to review hardware engineering artifacts to find compliance to the applicable systems guidance, standards, and regulations including but not limited to Technical Standard Orders (TSO), DO-160G, Advisory Circulars, Foreign Certification Memos, etc.
  • Serve as compliance approver to formally approve engineering artifacts for compliance to the applicable guidance, standards, and regulations
  • Work with engineering to resolve findings of non-compliance to the applicable guidance, standards, and regulations
  • Provide certification interface with customers, design specialists, suppliers and subcontracts, allocating compliance demonstration expectations
  • Mentor engineering during the development of detailed planning in the context of a program team, including customization of development processes
  • Provide independent assessment of airworthiness process adherence
  • Perform High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF) and lightning integrated system test (IST) campaigns in collaboration with various internal and external stakeholders
  • Assure that project planning is accomplished to the appropriate level of fidelity and that development teams are following appropriate processes.
  • Understand and utilize internal processes, methods and tools for review and approval of engineering artifacts for compliance
  • Understand current development and documentation processes and techniques
  • Review metrics and defect trends, identify systemic root causes and process improvements
  • Recommend new approaches, tools and techniques that drive continuous improvement in development, review and approval processes
  • Maintain awareness of technology within the domains of their area of expertise and develop technology strategies for the domains in the area of expertise
  • Complete recurrent training expectations applicable for finding compliance to guidance, standards, and regulations
  • Be considered a domain specialist or a generalist in multiple domains and/or systems areas of expertise.
  • Travel up to 25%

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • Progressively responsible engineering experience, including environmental lab experience
  • Experience with the Stage of Involvement (SOI) audit process for TSO
  • Domain experience and knowledge of products, systems and applicable environmental regulatory requirements

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience performing HIRF and lightning integrated system test (IST) campaigns
  • Compliance evaluator experience
