Auto Mechanic – Cedar Rapids Community School District
OverviewPosition in the Transportation Department responsible for the maintenance and repair of all district vehicles.
Classification & CompensationSalary: $24.15 per hour. Non‑exempt; hours may vary based on district needs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Overhaul, repair, and service district vehicles—including gasoline, LPG, electric, and diesel buses, vans, cars, and trucks.
- Perform vehicle safety inspections and document compliance.
- Use diagnostic tools and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Operate equipment safely and perform emergency road service calls.
- Assist with property maintenance tasks (e.g., snow removal) and substitute bus/van driving as needed.
- Maintain a professional appearance and communicate effectively with students, staff, and the community.
- Complete all required trainings, meetings, and professional development activities.
- Accurately complete reports, paperwork, and documentation in a timely manner.
- Adhere to federal, state, and district policies and procedures.
- Utilize technology (e.g., computerized diagnostic software) as required.
- Safely operate various types of school buses, district vehicles, and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED acceptable).
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in large truck and/or auto mechanics (preferred but not required).
- Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with proper endorsements, maintained within the required time frame.
- Valid DOT physical and Medical Certificate in compliance with FMCSA requirements.
- Pass pre‑employment and subsequent agility, driving history, and background checks.
- Maintain an FMCSA Clearinghouse account and respond to queries within 24 hours.
- Pass pre‑employment substance abuse screening as well as all random and reasonable‑suspicion drug and alcohol tests.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage tight deadlines, and adapt to interruptions.
- Willingness to learn new skills and unfamiliar systems.
- Effective problem‑solving and basic mathematical skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Knowledge of Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas for navigation.
- Provide all small hand tools required for auto mechanics.
- Accept and implement coaching and training promptly.
- Repeated sitting, standing, climbing, walking, stooping, bending, squatting, crawling, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Repeatedly pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and moving objects and/or students weighing up to 125 pounds over a distance of 100+ feet.
- Continuous use of hands, fingers, and wrists to manipulate fine objects and tools repetitively.
- Reach above the head for extended periods.
- Rapid mental and muscular coordination.
- Maintain accurate depth perception and vision at varying distances.
- Operate hydraulic, electric, and air equipment and tools.
- Ascend and descend approximately 14‑inch steps regularly.
- Enter and exit vehicles regularly.
- Contact with blood‑borne pathogens or bodily fluids.
- Exposure to chemicals, fuels, loud noise, intense brightness, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Risk of injury from moving mechanical parts and working at elevated heights.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
- Vibratory tools and electrical/hydraulic equipment hazards.
- Work outside in varied weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, icy).
May be exposed to heights, loud noises, bright lights, fumes, dust, chemicals, and odors.
Work with moving vehicles and motorized equipment. - Direct contact with the public, students, and district staff.
- May require hearing and eye protection.
