CNC Machinist
This role focuses on operating and setting up CNC mills and lathes to produce precision components for specialized machinery. You will write and edit programs in Mastercam, manage frequent short-run changeovers, and maintain tight tolerances while performing basic machine maintenance and ensuring all machining operations meet required specifications.
Responsibilities
- Operate and set up CNC mill and lathe machines to produce precision parts according to specifications.
- Write, edit, and optimize CNC programs using Mastercam to support production needs.
- Handle an average of 2 to 5 changeovers per day, efficiently managing short-run production.
- Maintain tolerances of +/-.005 to ensure high-quality, accurate components.
- Perform basic maintenance on CNC machines to keep equipment in good working condition.
- Monitor and maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, cutting, turning, facing, knurling, and thread-chasing operations.
- Read and interpret blueprints to determine machining requirements and setup parameters.
- Troubleshoot machining and programming issues to minimize downtime and improve process reliability.
- Collaborate with a small team while also working independently to meet production goals.
- Follow all safety procedures and shop guidelines in a unionized manufacturing environment.
Essential Skills
- Ability to operate and program CNC mills or lathes.
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience setting up and operating CNC machines.
- Experience with writing and editing CNC programs, preferably in Mastercam.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints accurately.
- Proficient computer and technical skills relevant to CNC programming and machine operation.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for machining, programming, and changeover processes.
- Capability to maintain tight tolerances of +/-.005 on machined parts.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience beyond basic machine operation, with demonstrated ability to set up machines and edit programs rather than only running pre-set programs.
- Familiarity with short-run production environments involving frequent changeovers.
- Comfort working independently within a small team on a union shop floor.
- Understanding of basic machine maintenance practices.
- Willingness to work outside of first shift when needed and take advantage of available overtime.
- Ability to adapt to a non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Permanent position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $41600.00 - $70000.00/yr. 401k, pto, paid holidays, benefits

This is a fully onsite position in Cedar Rapids, IA.
