Endorsements: Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities
  • Implements the individualized health plan (plan of care) as written by the school nurse.
  • Provides health care services under the supervision of the school nurse.
  • Assesses, plans, coordinates, and delivers school health services.
  • Functions as a member of a multidisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for students.
  • Provides outreach activities, case finding, case management, and care coordination.
  • Manages health office activities.
  • Trains and supervises non-licensed personnel performing health procedures.
  • Provides anticipatory guidance and health education activities emphasizing self-care, wellness, personal health practices, and appropriate use of health resources.
  • Provides health counseling and guidance to students and their families.
  • Provides consultation services including home and community visits.
  • Initiates and coordinates referrals to and/or linkages with health agencies.
  • Collaborates with others in the school and surrounding community to improve students' health.
  • Works with others to minimize environmental risk factors and promote health and safety within the school setting.
  • Assists staff with strategies to support and meet students’ needs and achievement of academic goals.
  • Provides active communication and positive relationships with parents and community members.
  • Assists in planning and delivery of social, emotional, and behavioral school-wide programming.
  • Maintains appropriate records and protects the confidentiality of data.
  • Meets the Standards of School Nursing Practice and the Iowa Teaching Standards on a consistent basis.
  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience

Previous pediatric nursing, school health nursing, or community health nursing experience highly desirable.

Skills & Abilities
  • Language skills:
    Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and implement ideas in technical documents, assessment data, professional journals, and regulations; effectively write and present reports to students, colleagues, parents, and staff; respond to questions from administrators, teachers, staff, and students; assist students in language and literacy.
  • Mathematical skills:
    Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals, and fractions; assist students in implementing these concepts.
  • Reasoning ability:
    Ability to solve problems, interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Required dispositions:
    Belief that all children can attain high levels of learning; responsibility for learning; knowledge and skills to build effective educational experiences; continuous improvement mindset; effectiveness on the educational team; integrity; interpersonal skills; track record of success.
  • Other skills and abilities:
    Apply knowledge of current research related to educational goals; establish effective working relationships; speak clearly and concisely; perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Physical Demands

Frequent standing, walking, use of hands and fingers, talking, hearing; frequent squatting, stooping, kneeling, reaching; lifting or moving up to 50 pounds; pushing or pulling items. Vision: close vision, color vision, ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, reports, assessment data.

Work Environment

Quiet noise level; professional working hours potentially extending beyond typical 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; work in various classroom areas including desks, floor, indoor and outdoor supervision.
