Overview

This position is responsible for coordinating and delivering St. Luke’s Safety, Accreditation, and Environment of Care (EOC) programs throughout the hospital, working with senior leadership and departmental staff, as well as external regulatory resources. The Safety Officer ensures the safest possible physical environment for patients, staff, visitors, and students by organizing and conducting drills, inspections, and training required by federal, state, and local authorities.

The role includes documentation of activities, follow‑up on safety concerns, maintaining compliance records, and supporting continuous survey readiness for accreditation standards such as DNV and CMS. The incumbent supports facility management and department managers on safety and regulatory compliance, reporting any safety incidents or events in a timely manner.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate management plans, meetings, and sub‑committees with facilities, quality, and plant operations leadership to advance hospital safety.
  • Collaborate with Safety, Employee Health, and Infection Control departments to revise and update safety programs.
  • Manage hospital processes that evaluate and correct environmental risks, ensuring conditions related to risk, code, and safety are documented and addressed.
  • Oversee major construction and renovation projects from a life/fire safety perspective, providing advice to maintain code compliance.
  • Develop and implement policies that support compliance with DNV Standards and other regulatory agencies, monitor service performance, and report on accountability.
  • Lead regular EOC rounds to assess the physical environment, detect code violations and hazards, review event reports, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct risk assessments of building systems, utilities, equipment, and occupants to proactively evaluate impacts on safety.
  • Prepare annual EOC management plan evaluations for the EOC committee and board, and participate in hospital or medical staff committees to identify service requirements and staffing needs.
  • Work directly with Support Service Managers to report and monitor key compliance indicators, assist with improvement initiatives, and implement action plans.
  • Support hospital sustainability efforts by reviewing operations and collaborating with leaders on industry‑leading initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience, including at least one (1) year of progressively responsible safety experience or a related industry substitute.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to work effectively with executives, clinicians, staff, and vendors.
  • Relationship and project management experience.
  • Knowledge of environmental factors and their effects on employee health and well‑being.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
