Preventive Maintenance Mechanic

CEDAR RAPIDS COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

Position Title: Preventive Maintenance Mechanic

Principal Duties: Under the supervision of the Buildings and Grounds Manager and/or the Preventative Maintenance Specialist, the Preventive Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the following:

  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on all aspects of the physical plant equipment including HVAC equipment, lighting systems, and plumbing components.
  • Provide support to the Operations Department in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fabrication, and other general operational needs.
  • Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles used in the trade.
  • Report to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis with a strong attendance history.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Essential Skills / Aptitudes / Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) systems found in school buildings.
  • Ability to work from and read sketches, blueprints, and specification manuals from oral or written instructions.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform demanding tasks including lifting, bending, climbing, and working from ladders and scaffolding.
  • Must be willing to work under adverse weather conditions.
  • Varied work day with shifts ranging from 7:00 am to 7:30 pm and others as necessary.
  • Capable of representing the school district in a professional manner, including confidentiality and professional personal image.
  • Ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to problem‑solve independently and with others.
  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.

Licenses and

Certifications:

  • Valid Iowa State Driver’s license with a satisfactory record to the district and its insurance carrier (required).

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals, and fractions.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve problems effectively and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, colleagues, community members, staff, and students; awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, handling tools or controls, talking, and hearing; must lift 50 lbs frequently; climb ladders and work from platforms or scaffolds; excellent physical condition; close vision and color vision required for equipment and software use.

Classification: Salary and benefits in accordance with Work Agreement with Local 199, Service Employees International Union.

Work Environment: The work environment is generally quiet, may become louder in large group settings, and requires professional work hours that may extend beyond a typical 7:30 am to 4:30 pm schedule.
