Special Education Interventionist – Grant Wood Elementary, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Job Summary

The Special Education Interventionist is responsible for providing behavioral, academic, and mental health support to students in an effort to increase student academic achievement. The responsibilities may include monitoring student behaviors, implementing plans of support, connecting youth and families to social service providers, facilitating collaborative planning, and ensuring coordinated services match assessed needs.

Organizational and Reporting Relationships

The interventionist reports directly to the building/program administrator and works with building staff, ELSC staff, and community agencies.

Essential Job Functions

Team Collaboration

  • Provide active communication and positive relationships with parents, students, staff, and community members
  • Analyze behavioral trends and patterns
  • Assist with behavior intervention plan (BIP) development and implementation
  • Assist with interventions and BIP implementation checklists
  • Meet with families in convenient locations
  • Attend IEP and support team meetings for communication and service coordination
  • Assist staff with strategies to support students’ needs in behavior, autism supports, and IEP goals
  • Develop and implement programming for academic, behavioral, and SEB needs, such as small group and whole group instruction

Student Support

  • Assist with de-escalation of student behaviors and reintegration into classroom work system
  • Administer one-to-one intensive behavior interventions and participate in behavior intervention meetings
  • Assist teacher with Medicaid summaries and daily Medicaid logs
  • Assist with transition of students back to home building when applicable
  • Provide supervision of students (lunch duty, recess, substitute rotation, arrival) as directed
  • Serve as an active member of the PBIS team

Case Management

  • Assist and provide transportation for students and families when appropriate
  • Collaborate with mental health therapist
  • Foster and support community partnerships
  • Maintain harmonious relationships with the public, students, and employees
  • Serve as liaison between students, community, and home attendance building when applicable

Restorative Justice (Off-site specific)

  • Assist with restorative justice process and complete training
  • Perform restorative circles

Student Attendance

  • Track student daily attendance
  • Apply attendance intervention process (phone calls, parent letters, visits)
  • Oversee attendance policy with secretary (attendance letters)
  • Review and analyze attendance data and trends during interventions

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or related program (preferred); or prior job experience in a related position.
  • Experience with Autism support strategies, visual schedules, Check and Connect, Aggression Replacement Training, Restorative Practices, SEB strategies, behavioral interventions, and trauma‑informed practices (preferred).
  • Experience working with children in a school setting.
