Job SummaryWe are seeking a Software Engineer for our Avionics Software Tools Team based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The software engineer will join a team of software and systems engineers driving solutions for many avionics teams, supporting Avionics development teams and simulations across Commercial Business Jets, Air Transport aircraft, and Mission Systems aircraft programs. Our tools enable the development of avionics products, test avionics systems, and produce Avionics software configuration files for products.
These tools are used by engineers across Collins Aerospace and by our aircraft manufacturing customers and operators. They provide desktop and cloud Avionics environments, enable Avionics test stands, flight deck system integration facilities, and DO-330 qualified tools for configuration file verification. This role provides experience across the breadth of our Avionics organization.
This is an onsite role in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
What You Will Do- Work in a team focused on innovation and production of software tools that enable Avionics airborne software development, verification and production.
- Code, test, and provide ongoing support for simulation software and Avionics configuration tools to meet technical and customer requirements.
- Implement Dev Ops tools and processes in Avionics engineering and apply technologies to automate and streamline avionics software production.
- Develop tools and testing infrastructures that support automated build and continuous integration, and test using a variety of languages including C/C++, Python, Java and Robot Framework.
- Collaborate using software configuration management tools and Dev Ops tools such as Git, GitMR, Artifactory, Jama, Grafana and Docker in a cross-platform environment including Linux and Windows.
- Gain experience in Cert Dev Ops, developing and contributing new methods, technologies and techniques to automate software testing and verification.
- Be part of a team that integrates virtual Avionics environments on desktop PCs and AWS to enable continuous test and integration used in flight deck design, product creation, and customer demonstrations.
- Enter embedded safety‑critical software development through building unqualified and DO-330 qualified software tools used to test airborne software, produce configuration files, avionics network switches, and end systems.
- Work on aircraft that span business jets, commercial aircraft, and military aircraft, gaining exposure to diverse teams and departments.
- Learn how current generation Avionics test rigs are designed and built and contribute to the design of next generation test rigs incorporating new technologies and serving new customers.
- Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience.
- U.S. Person required – job requires access to ITAR or 600/500-series EAR information or hardware.
- Previous experience leading small technical projects or processes.
- Experience using one or more of the following programming languages: C/C++/C#, Python, Java.
- Experience with Linux and Microsoft Windows 11 and familiarity with operating and using software on Windows PCs.
- Ability to work in a team and make sound ethical decisions that drive results.
- Ability and aptitude to learn programming languages on the job as technologies evolve.
- Use of formal configuration management tools such as Git.
- Familiarity with automated testing of software through unit tests, functional testing and/or high‑level tests.
