Transportation - Trip Bus Driver
Location: ELSC - Transportation, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Classification: School Bus Driver.
Compensation: $21.65 per hour, non-exempt, in accordance with work agreement.
Essential Duties- Safely transport students to and from athletic and field trips.
- Effectively manage student behavior and maintain a cooperative attitude.
- Keep vehicle clean, safe, and presentable; perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections.
- Apply the district's student medical protocols and IEP requirements during transport.
- Assist non‑ambulatory students in and out of the vehicle.
- Complete reports and paperwork promptly, including vehicle maintenance requests, behavior referrals, and timecards.
- Use technology and vehicle equipment such as wheel‑chair lifts, radios, and emergency devices.
- Report accidents, safety or maintenance concerns, and moving violations to Transportation Manager.
- Maintain vehicle fuel level in accordance with department policy.
- Stand by to conduct quick, safe evacuation in emergencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent; age 18 or older.
- Valid Class B CDL with school bus and passenger endorsements.
- Valid DOT physical and Medical Certificate per FMCSA requirements.
- Pass pre‑employment and periodic background checks, agility tests, and driving history checks.
- Pass pre‑employment substance abuse screening and all random or reasonable‑suspicion alcohol/drug tests.
- Maintain FMCSA Clearinghouse account and respond to queries within 24 hours.
- Strong problem‑solving, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to navigate Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas.
- Professional driving experience preferred (not required).
- Extended sitting, standing, and walking; regular ascending and descending of approximately 14‑inch steps.
- Regular entry and exit of vehicle; rapid lifting and carrying of up to 75 lbs for 100+ feet; pushing/pulling wheelchairs or other equipment up to 75 lbs.
- Repetitive use of hands, fingers, and wrists; stooping, bending, kneeling; reach up to 72 inches to operate wheelchair lift.
- Expected to drive vehicle under varying temperatures, heights, and in presence of loud noises, fumes, dust.
- Maintaining vision for small details and clear depth perception.
- Possible exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, chemicals used for cleaning, and mobile equipment operation.
- Possible contact with blood‑borne pathogens and bodily fluids.
- Exposure to chemicals used for cleaning buses.
- Indoor/outdoor conditions with changing temperatures, extreme heat and cold.
- Direct contact with the public, students, and other district staff.
- Exposure to heights, loud noises, fumes, dust, and other odors.
