Severe Needs Para Educator Job Summary

Under the guidance of licensed special education staff, the Para‑Educator assists students with severe special education needs. Responsibilities include delivering curriculum to individuals or small groups, implementing programming, generalizing learned skills, and applying behavior strategies. The role also involves preparing materials, monitoring students, recording achievement, providing technical physical care, and maintaining a clean and hygienic environment. In online/remote settings, the Para‑Educator supports students with remote learning access, re‑teaching curriculum, setting up executive functioning strategies, and ensuring assignment completion.

These duties are performed across various assignments, including Autism, Behavior Development, Early Childhood Education, Homebound (FAPE), Integrated Learning Center (ILC), Serious Emotional Disability (SED), and Transition Programming.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Shared tasks across all assignments:

  • Assist students with classroom activities, adapt curriculum to individual needs, and deliver curriculum to individuals and small groups to ensure skills generalization.
  • Implement accommodations, supports, and modifications outlined in each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP); maintain records of progress and behavior; provide feedback and reporting to the IEP team.
  • Assist licensed special education staff in preparing materials, administering tests, attendance, paperwork, and classroom events such as fire drills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Integrated Learning Center (ILC) and Homebound Program Assignment
  • Monitor students and reinforce appropriate behavior; assist in verbal de‑escalation and non‑violent crisis interventions; aid development of social interactions or communication with peers.
  • Provide technical physical care, including toileting, grooming, cleaning ventilation devices, feeding, G‑tube care, positioning, and medication delivery.
  • Support other ILC and Homebound related duties as needed.
  • Serious Emotional Disability (SED) Assignment
  • Monitor students and reinforce appropriate behavior; assist in verbal de‑escalation and non‑violent crisis interventions; aid development of social interactions or communication with peers.
  • Online/Remote Environment
  • Assist small groups or individuals with online classroom activities, curriculum accommodations, and practice for skill generalization.
  • Prepare assignments for completion at home and support students in completing assigned work.
  • Maintain records of student progress and behavior; report observations to the IEP team.
  • Support students in troubleshooting technology issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Reporting Relationships

    This position reports to a School Principal or designee and has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required.
    • High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.
    • No professional work experience required.
    • For Title I assignments, meet at least one of the following: completed at least two years of college study; obtained an associate’s or higher degree; or met a rigorous standard of academic achievement with demonstrated knowledge of reading/language arts, writing, or mathematics.
    • Mandatory biennial Crisis Prevention Intervention training for staff working with Autism, Behaviorally Disordered, or ILC assignments.
    • Medication administration training provided by the District as needed.
    • Basic knowledge of office equipment such as telephones, copiers, fax machines, and email.
    • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
    • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills.
    • Intermediate interpersonal relations skills.
    • Intermediate organizational skills.
    • Ability to work alone and with others.
    • Ability to appropriately modify curriculum.
    • Ability to implement behavior modification techniques.
    • Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
