Overview
Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting for vacant positions at the Buena Vista location. The Buena Vista Correctional Complex is comprised of Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF) and Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC). BVCF opened in 1892 as the Colorado State Reformatory; BVMC opened in 1999. BVCF capacity: 934 inmates (medium custody); BVMC capacity: 300 inmates (minimum custody).

Temporary Aides are limited to nine (9) months within a 12-month rolling period, beginning on the first day of work for the temporary assignment.

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) temporary position maintains safety and security of CDOC facilities. Officers support the CDOC mission, vision, and values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Officers communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, and the public; work as part of a team; and manage a diverse inmate population.
Key duties include, but are not limited to:
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required);
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
- Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
- Control movement of inmates according to daily schedule;
- Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles;
- Monitor visiting areas;
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts;
- Cross check and maintain movement logs;
- Conduct searches for contraband (can include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, and vehicle searches);
- Inspect facility and cells for health, safety, and sanitation;
- Inspect inmate mail and property;
- Respond to emergencies using established protocols;
- Follow tool and key control procedures and maintain documentation;
- Attend roll calls and document incidents using established reporting practices;
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain 24/7 facility safety and security.
Minimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED certificate.

- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States. CDOC uses e-Verify and does not sponsor non-residents.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license and maintain it in accordance with State driving standards. Driving eligibility and record requirements apply for state vehicle operation.
- Former state employees with disciplinary terminations or resignations may be disqualified; disclosures are required.
- No felony convictions as described in applicable policy; some offenses may disqualify.
- Successful completion of a background investigation is required; provide disposition information for any charges.
- All offers contingent on a health screening certifying ability to perform essential functions; consent to hold harmless CDOC for testing and information use.
- Complete all required Basic Training modules, including English reading comprehension and assessments in Defensive Tactics.
- Possess physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics and related drills; the role may involve exposure to oleoresin capsicum during training and assignment.
- Willingness and ability to work all shifts, weekends, holidays, and inclement weather; new COs will receive shift schedules after basic training.
