The Traffic Safety Unit is responsible for traffic education and enforcement in an assigned area in order to keep accident rates down: issues traffic violation citations; assists injured motorists; and investigates accidents, hit-and-run cases, and citizen complaints related to traffic matters.

• Performs routine traffic enforcement duties for the purpose of detecting and enforcing violations of state, county and municipal traffic codes.
• Responds to and assists patrol deputies on calls for service on an emergency or non-emergency basis.
• Conducts investigations of incidents, crimes or accidents to obtain pertinent facts and information, determine violation(s) and cite or arrest as appropriate.
• Conducts interviews of witnesses, victims, participants or suspects at the scene of an incident, crime or accident.
• Collects and preserves evidence and property at the accident scene.
• Arrests suspects involved in misdemeanor/felony criminal activity; writes citations to individuals for minor violations of the law.
• Prepares reports, forms, and documents related to patrol activities.
• Utilizes in car computer system to: write reports, self-dispatch to calls for service, obtain call history, obtain history and in house records on contacted individuals.
• Appears in court as witness/complainant to provide testimony.
• Provides assistance, direction, and support to persons in need during non-law enforcement emergency and non-emergency situations.
• Is committed to a high standard of safety laws and all of the Sheriff’s Office policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
• Maintains regular and acceptable attendance at a level that is determined at the Sheriff’s Office discretion.
• Is available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as the Sheriff’s Office determines is necessary or desirable to meet its needs.
• Is available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the Sheriff’s Office determines are necessary or desirable to meet its needs.
• Follows and supports the mission, values, organizational philosophies, operational principles, code of conduct and policies and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
• Interacts effectively with others and exercises good judgment when dealing with people in sensitive situations.
• Performs duties regularly assigned to the Sergeant level in the absence of the Sergeant as a temporary duty.
• May have to act as incident commander until a higher-ranking person assumes command.
• May be assigned other duties as necessary.

• Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques and equipment.
• Working knowledge of the policies, procedures and methods utilized by the Agency.
• Working knowledge of Federal and State law, County ordinances.
• Working knowledge of traffic enforcement theories, principles and tactics.
• Working knowledge of accident investigation theories, principles and tactics.
• Ability to maintain Agency proficiency standards in the use of firearms.
• Ability to safely operate a county vehicle in normal and adverse conditions.
