This temporary position is for the start of the 2026-27 school year within the Division of Student Services of the Chester County Intermediate Unit. The appointment is expected to run September through December 2026, with potential extension not guaranteed.
Summary of PositionThe Reading Specialist develops and implements an individual and/or small group instructional program for students based on data gathered through reading evaluations, observation, teacher input, and parent/guardian input. The Reading Specialist designs prescriptive and intentional reading instruction that drives attainment of student achievement outcomes, monitors students' progress, and communicates this information to classroom teachers, administration, IEP/504 Teams, and parents/guardians.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in special education or general education (required)
- Wilson training (preferred), Wilson Certification (preferred)
- Master's degree in reading (preferred)
- 3 years teaching experience (required), experience teaching reading (preferred)
- Valid PA Reading Specialist certification (required)
- Valid PA Special Education teaching certification (preferred)
- Current within one year police, child abuse & FBI Fingerprint clearances (required)
- Design and implement developmentally appropriate literacy instruction rooted in best practices.
- Provide direct instruction in the areas of reading and writing to students individually or in a small group format.
- Provide literacy instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with their individualized education program (IEP).
- Implement a wide range of evidence-based programs with fidelity according to program guidelines and individual student needs.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials to address students' individual needs.
- Maintain an organized system and accessible location for the storage and circulation of reading and writing materials.
- Support executive functioning needs for students by designing coherent processes in the primary areas of organization, planning, processing, initiating, and completing assigned tasks.
- Work cooperatively with intermediate unit, school district, public charter and/or nonpublic staff, including special education teachers, general education teachers, pupil services staff, and related service providers, and outside agencies to coordinate student’s program and provide appropriate level of support.
- Collect and analyze progress monitoring data and prepare appropriate progress monitoring reports and evaluation report summaries according to required timelines.
- Serve as a member of the Multidisciplinary evaluation team and/or IEP team to review student progress based on delivery of reading specialist services.
- Lead professional development to professional staff and support staff in regards to best practices in the area of literacy development and teaching methodologies.
- Provide leadership and expertise in the area of literacy development and curriculum selection.
- Assist in the selection of appropriate materials utilized by the classroom teacher.
- Participate in interagency meetings when necessary.
- Coordinate requests for direct services with referring district or school.
- Log student support services according to the identified frequency and duration.
- Create and manage individual schedule of student services on caseload.
- Attend department meetings and professional development.
- Adhere to intermediate policies and procedures.
- Adhere to professional, ethical, and legal standards.
