Job Description

The Central Falls School District welcomes applications for the position of School Nutrition Program Specialist. In this position, the Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all school food service operations are fully compliant with federal, state, and local regulations, including USDA guidelines under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), and other child nutrition programs. The candidate will support administrative, monitoring, and training efforts to uphold food safety standards, proper meal claiming procedures, and nutritional requirements across all district schools.

Position Specifics:

  • This is a 12-month salaried non-union position. This Position includes benefits, retirement/state pension, and generous PTO.
  • Visit program sites (NSBP, NSLP, ASSP, CACFP) at each site at least once weekly to ensure compliance with USDA guidelines using the RIDE checklist and training as a guide.
  • Assist in training staff and Food Service Management Company (FSMC) personnel to ensure accuracy and complete understanding of required documentation.
  • Provide training to all food service staff prior to program initiation and throughout the school year as needed.
  • Manage a team of approximately 8 staff members during after school programming and summer food service programs, including managing daily call-outs.
  • Review all site paperwork weekly for accuracy prior to official submission to the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE).
  • Process and submit monthly program claims in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Stay current with changes to federal and state child nutrition regulations, communicating relevant updates to district leadership and staff.
  • Serve as the departmental liaison between Finance and FACE regarding free and reduced-price meal family applications.
  • Complete annual program applications for the National School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program, and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
  • Prepare operational reports covering site visits, operational reviews, and food service compliance.
  • Oversee all Summer Food Service Programming, including staff training, application management, site visits, and direct interactions with RIDE.
  • Lead all district food service audits and manage the FSMC contract renewal process.
  • Review all food service invoices, monthly menus, and profit and loss statements on a monthly basis.
  • Collaborate with school principals and administrative leaders to enforce program compliance across all locations.
  • Serve as the primary administrative liaison to RIDE for child nutrition operations.
  • Such other responsibilities may from time to time be assigned by the Chief Financial Officer and/or Superintendent.
Job Requirements
  • Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Food Service Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
    • Serv Safe Manager Certification preferred.
    • Considerable experience in child nutrition programs or school food service management.
    • Outstanding Customer Service Skills.
    • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Effective attention to detail
    • Respond to program, menu, and compliance issues in a timely manner
    • Ability to prioritize complex program requirements is essential
    • Excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills
    • Knowledge of USDA/RIDE regulations, financial reporting, and strong Microsoft Excel skills
    • Experience managing vendor contracts (FSMC) and staff oversight
    • Bilingual (preferred)
    • Ability to work in person primarily
    • High regard for confidentiality
