Position Overview

Hunter Communications is searching for a skilled Directional Drill Operator to join our growing team.

Responsibilities
  • Locate for Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
  • Ensure safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drill.
  • Assist in potholing and remediation.
  • Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie‑ins.
  • Read and comprehend utility locates.
  • Perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 70 lbs. on occasion.
  • Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks, and ground the machine.
  • Properly formulate and mix drilling mud for site conditions.
  • Perform proper reaming and pull‑back methods for existing conditions.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct visual inspections of vehicle/equipment to ensure optimal safety; perform required pre‑trip, post‑trip inspections and reports, and needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.
  • Communicate with supervisor daily and turn in required reports (e.g., bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs).
  • Follow job specifications and company policies.
  • Comply with safety procedures on and off the project site.
  • Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work.
Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Class A driver’s license (other candidates may be considered, especially CDL permit holders or Class B holders).
  • Experience in utility construction.
  • Read and interpret underground construction plans and written instructions.
  • Ability to think ahead and use independent judgment.
  • Must live or be willing to relocate within 35 minutes of the office.
  • Clean driving record.
