Interpreter for the Deaf
Reports to:
Executive Director of Special Services Location: Special Services (itinerant)
Bargaining Unit: Part-Time Teamsters FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Summary:
Under the direction of a teacher, this position is responsible for interpretation and translation of lectures and discussions to deaf students as well as other responsibilities assigned by the teacher.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Associate degree (or higher) OR 72 quarter credits/48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college OR passing of the Education Testing (ETS) para educator assessment
- Ability to finish 28 hours of training in alignment with the Fundamental Course of Study requirements OR have completed the 28 hours of training in another Washington State school district
- Training leading to the Comprehensive Skills Certification with a score of 3.5 on the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) and/or hold a RID certification and pass the written portion of the EIPA
· Able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing tasks and priorities
- Ability to voice to sign and sign to voice or cue to voice and voice to cue
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
· Able to follow written or verbal direction and take initiative to see clarity and take action when needed
· Ability to communicate effectively, possess awareness (for self and others), listen actively, be patient, incorporate humor/lightheartedness into work, be empathic, possess a growth mindset, and be customer-service oriented
· Ability to support the District’s vision, mission, goals, and Culture Code including the belief that all students can succeed
- Possession of an understanding of the concept of educational interpreting
· Ability to maintain a positive attitude
· Successful experience working with self-direction and a high degree of collaboration
- Possession of organizational skills and flexibility to respond to changing student needs

· Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience working in a school setting
· Ability to speak Spanish
· Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
Essential Functions:
· Assist hearing impaired students in classrooms by using fluent signing to interpret the lesson as taught by the classroom teacher and helping the student ask questions of the teacher
· Interprets for hearing impaired students participating in extra-curricular events
· Interprets behavioral directions and physically assist when necessary; may provide hand-over-hand support as determined by the IEP team
· Understanding of the deaf community
· Motivates, redirects student behavior, and interacts with students in a productive manner
· Stays current on policies and laws related to the field of interpreting for the deaf
· Develops and maintains collaborative and transparent relationships with other district staff, families, and community partners
· Completes all documentation as required by law or prescribed by the Executive Director of Special Services
· Ability to work with students in a self-contained setting
· Attends staff and other professional meetings as appropriate or directed
· Uses and integrate technology for communication and instruction
· Other duties as assigned
Salary: $34.51 - $41.20 per hour, depending on experience; $.50 additional per hour for individuals with an Associate of Arts degree or higher; $.50 additional per hour for individuals who can write, speak, and read fluently in Spanish
Work schedule: 6.5 hours per day, 192 days per school year
Benefits: 11 paid holidays; 11 sick leave days; 3 personal leave days; health insurance through SEBB including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability insurance, State retirement through DRS; other fringe benefits as allowed in the Part-Time Teamsters Collective Bargaining Agreement.
