Job Summary

The Behavior Specialist supports student, classroom, and school positive behavior to help students achieve academic and personal success. Coordinates and conducts Functional Assessments of Behavior and Behavior Intervention Plans and provides a means to help students become more academically successful. Provides support to staff and provides student based support related to behavior, Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), and student data. Also, consults with staff, parents, and others to support behavioral improvement.

Required Qualifications
  • Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement(s)
  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience or five years of successful experience providing school-based student related services
  • Possession of expert knowledge and function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focus on modifying behaviors to allow students to be academically successful
  • Possession of expert knowledge of techniques needed to successfully complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function-based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)
  • Ability to successfully use assessment data to inform instruction and collaboratively develop work plans for individual students
  • Ability to effectively implement research based instructional and behavioral strategies
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional skill in the roles of a teacher leader including collaboration, action research, reflective practice, and learner advocacy
  • Completion of trauma informed, de‑escalation training or complete within six (6) months of position
  • Ability to communicate effectively, possess awareness of self and others, listen actively, be patient, incorporate humor/lightheartedness into work, be empathic, possess a growth mindset, and be customer-service oriented
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of employment
  • Ability to support the District’s vision, mission, goals, and culture code including the belief that all students can succeed

Preferred (Not Required) Qualifications
  • Ability to speak Spanish
  • Successful experience working with diverse individuals
  • Certification in Special Education or related field
  • Masters Degree in a related field
Essential Functions
  • Provides leadership and direction at the school level regarding effective behavior systems
  • Works to design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive behavior support program
  • Collaborates with administration and other staff to develop, implement and/or support behavior management procedures
  • Conducts Functional Behavior Assessments and develops positive Behavior Intervention Plans for students
  • Provides behavioral and/or crisis intervention for students
  • Works directly with identified students to adopt behaviors that substantially increase their academic performance
  • Under the supervision of the building principal, provides diversified strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students or for teachers or classrooms
  • Effectively supports student acquisition of core curriculum and academic and social emotional standards identified by the State
  • Supports staff in defining and measuring behavior, understanding principles of reinforcement, teaching new behaviors, implementing strategies for improving behavior, and identifying antecedents
  • Facilitates team meetings with identified student’s teacher and family for the purpose of completing a Functional Behavioral Assessment
  • Facilitates team meetings that design behavior intervention plans, address classroom structures, and discuss effective instruction including social skills
  • Promotes and/or provides highly specialized positive behavior interventions that include behavior instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated and provides ample practice in a manner in which students thrive
