SHELTER SUPERVISOR
DEPARTMENT: SOCIAL SERVICES
STATUS: TEMPORARY, FULL-TIME; NON-EXEMPT
SUPERVISOR: CORPS OFFICERS
Responsibilities- Will supervise all shelter workers on staff, including hours worked, policies followed during shift, continued training and oversight of nightly shelter operations.
- Set up schedule for shelter workers on a 7-day basis.
- Act as the contact person for all calls from shelter workers needing to change shifts and/or call out on shifts. Make necessary contacts to keep shifts filled with no exceptions. Contact the Corps Officers if someone cannot be found to cover a specific shift.
- In case of an emergency and as a last resort, be available to cover a shift that is open due to staff call out.
- Review nightly shift logs and follow up with staff and volunteers as needed. Update the Corps Officer of any unusual events or occurrences from the night before.
- Flag any policy violations to reporting staff; develop a written report, have the staff sign the form, and share the report with the Corps Officer for follow-up.
- Sit on the Client Grievance Committee and participate in decisions concerning client issues, termination (temporary or permanent), safety concerns, and operating changes.
- Monitor supplies and replenish as needed, including janitorial, bathroom, hygiene, intake supplies (bags, zip ties, etc.), and emergency supplies.
The Shelter Supervisor is the main point of contact for employee and volunteer concerns in the program and responds appropriately. Any concerns or requests that cannot be handled should be brought to the immediate attention of the Corps Officer.
Summary of Duties (Performing Nightly Shelter Duties as Needed)- Staffing and scheduling may require varying shifts. There are two standard shifts: opening and closing, each 6.5 hours with a 30-minute lunch. Responsibilities differ by shift but safety, staff, and clients rules apply to both.
- Follow The Salvation Army’s basic rules of operation for clients and staff, including admittance, personal items, bedding provisioning, and general cleaning and maintenance.
- Complete task sheets for opening or closing of shelter operations for the night.
- Adhere to The Salvation Army’s Social Services Code of Ethics and avoid conflicts of interest with participants or volunteers.
- Provide a warm, caring, and courteous environment that fosters cooperation, respect, and a sense of community.
- Enter pertinent information about activities into the shelter daily log during the assigned shift.
- Ensure a safe and secure environment for participants, staff, and volunteers, including regular checks of sleeping areas, bathrooms, and hygiene areas; diffuse conflicts and communicate concerns to staff and the Corps Officer.
- Distribute personal necessities to clients as needed and as items are available.
- Launder excess blankets, towels, and bedding as time permits.
- Support volunteers during shifts by orienting them to safety guidelines and responsibilities.
- Attend meetings scheduled by shelter supervision for training, planning, and operations.
- Maintain client confidentiality and notify the Shelter Supervisor of any issues during or after shifts.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by a supervisor.
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, kneel and/or twist on an intermittent or continual basis
- Ability to grasp, push, or pull objects such as files, bins, drawers
- Ability to reach overhead
- Ability to carry and place sleeping cots, storage carts, and personal possessions as needed
- Ability to lift 35 pounds
- Ability to operate a telephone, tablet, and basic electronic equipment
