Job Summary:
The Student Management Bus Monitor works alongside school bus drivers to promote a safe, orderly, and respectful transportation environment for students riding general education routes. The monitor serves as a behavior management resource on the bus, supporting drivers in the performance of student oversight to ensure drivers can focus on the safe operation of the vehicle.
This position actively supervises students during loading, transportation, and unloading; reinforces district expectations; assists with emergency preparedness; and communicates concerns to transportation administration. The position emphasizes positive student interactions, conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, and proactive behavior management.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ability to communicate effectively, possess awareness of self and others, listen actively, be patient, incorporate humor/lightheartedness into work, be empathic, possess a growth mindset
- Ability to support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and culture code including the belief that all students can succeed
- Ability to work with students in a productive, positive manner
- Ability to work with colleagues in a professional and courteous manner
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with youth
- Experience working with diverse populations
- Experience managing large groups of students.
- Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in any of the following environments:
Student transportation, school buildings, childcare, coaching, youth sports, camp counselor - Experience with conflict resolution.

Essential Functions:
- Assist drivers in maintaining a safe, orderly and respectful bus environment
- Monitor student interactions for appropriate behaviors and mitigate conflicts before escalation
- Promote positive student behavior through encouragement and relationship building; utilizing positive behavior intervention strategies
- Redirect inappropriate behaviors using district-approved techniques.
- Mediate disagreements between students
- Assist in developing seating arrangements to improve student behavior
- Model respectful communication and professionalism in all interactions
- Reinforce expectations rather than simply enforcing consequences.
- Communicate safety concerns promptly and professionally
- Support emergency evacuations and bus drills
- Help maintain a calm environment during delays, traffic incidents, or emergencies
- Administers first aid to students if appropriate
- Attends training as directed or appropriate
- Develops and maintains appropriate relationships with other staff, families, and students
- Work collaboratively and respectfully with other cooperative personnel and other District staff
- Possess clear communication skills, conflict management and resolution skills, fallibility, diplomacy, flexibility, patience, awareness (of self and others), and trustworthiness

Salary: $20.05 - 24.66 per hour, depending on qualifications
Work schedule:
Five (5) hours per day - 192 days per year
