Special Education Teacher
Special Education Teacher – 9 Month (187 Day) Contract
Qualifications:
- Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate – Special Education and/or Collaborative Education
- Meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations
Reports To: Principal and Special Education Coordinator
Required Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrate commitment to and support for the vision and mission of the system and school.Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.Demonstrates knowledge of the principles and practice of effective instruction for the special education classroom.Demonstrates professionalism in appearance and in attitude at all times.Demonstrates and models regular and predictable attendance.Uses technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required.Implements curriculum and programming specific to the needs of all students.Develops and implements an individualized education plan (IEP) that meets the individual goals and abilities of students and is consistent with federal, state, and local IDEA guidelines.Develop lesson plans to meet the school system's goals using Alabama State Course(s) of Study and/or Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards (when applicable).As an inclusion teacher, collaborates with general education teachers to plan and employ various appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities to help ensure that each student reaches maximum educational potential.As a small group setting teacher, plans and employs a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities utilizing Extended Standards and Alabama Alternate Assessment (AAA) goals to ensure that each student reaches maximum educational potential.Implements and updates the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) as required.Actively participates and works with school personnel and other IEP team members in selecting curriculum goals, specialized equipment, and other instructional materials to provide the student with maximum learning opportunities.Documents student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and progress reports.Follows the rules, guidelines, and procedures of Section 504 and IDEA amendments.Effectively implements special education processes such as eligibility, IEP, FBA, BIP, manifestation determination, etc.Maintains student records and submits required reports and data according to established protocols and timelines.Participates in system-adopted restraint training as requested and approved by the Central Office special education staff.Collaborates with teachers, local school administration, and counselors on matters related to special education, IEPs, FBAs, BIPs, disciplining students in special education and gifted education, accommodations/modifications to the curriculum, and all other items that may fall under special/gifted education.Communicates with parents/guardians about student progress, concerns, and academic achievement through verbal or written/electronic correspondence.Collaborates with local school administration and counselors on ongoing assessments to monitor student progress. Interprets and uses data for instructional planning, teaching, and program evaluation.Demonstrates high expectations for self and students and creates an environment with goals that are both rigorous and achievable.Manages learning behavior in the classroom and participates in managing students in other areas of the school and school grounds.Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.Serves on school system committees, task forces, and representative groups as required.Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.Attends local meetings, workshops, and…
