Role Purpose
To shape and oversee enterprise risk strategy, governance, and compliance frameworks for Africa Life, ensuring sustainable growth, regulatory alignment, and informed decision-making. The CRO acts as a strategic advisor to the executive team, embedding risk awareness across the business and leading legal, governance, and financial risk oversight across multiple jurisdictions.
Qualifications- Postgraduate degree in Risk Management, Finance, Law, Business Administration or related field (essential).
- Master’s degree in Risk, Governance, or Business Leadership (preferred)
- Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA);
Certified Risk Manager (CRM);
Institute of Risk Management (IRM) qualifications or equivalent (preferred) - Legal or compliance certifications (e.g., LLB, CCEP) (preferred)
- 10 years or more in senior risk, compliance, or governance roles within financial services
- Experience overseeing enterprise risk frameworks, ORSA processes, and regulatory compliance
- Proven ability to lead legal advisory and company secretarial functions
- Strong stakeholder engagement across boards, regulators, and executive teams
- Shape the organization's risk strategy and appetite
- Embed risk strategy and governance for the full Momentum Africa business including product management, technology, operations, distribution and in-country business activities
- Manage the identification and investigation of material risks that may have an impact on the ability of the business to meet its objectives
- Manage the ongoing assessment of the adequacy and efficiency of risk management framework, risk appetite statement, risk management strategy and controls at a business level and drive the implementation of measures to enhance controls and risk management.
- Advise on the risk implications of business decisions and provide consultative support to assess, prioritise and mitigate potential risks
- Contribute to group-wide risk governance and strategy as part of the risk community
- Shape legal strategy and approach for Momentum Africa business and provide leadership and oversight to the legal advisory function for the full Momentum Africa business including in‑country legal and compliance teams
- Direct and oversee the implementation of the risk and compliance strategy and compliance frameworks, processes, solutions (e.g. assurance, hedging, reinsurance etc.) and monitoring within the business, ensuring that the business remains within its risk appetite
- Drive implementation of risk and compliance strategy and frameworks in Africa countries, providing leadership, guidance and support to in‑country teams
- Establish the risk management processes for the business including identification, assessment, monitoring, management and reporting on key risks facing the business.
- Drive and embed effective legal advisory discipline, frameworks and practices
- Provide consultative support and insights
- Keep abreast of legislation and best practices within the risk and compliance field and understand and influence business strategy and culture
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements with regards to insurance business, including product management
- Provide leadership and oversight over the legal and company secretariat function
- Manage risk governance structures for the business as a whole including operational, product and technology risks
- Ensure adherence to regulatory solvency and capital adequacy in all companies and markets
- Foster a risk‑aware culture within the organization where risk and compliance activities are integrated and embedded in business practices
- Embed risk practices for product development, product management and the management of insurance risks.
