Maintenance Worker
This position is a part-time (unbenefited) role within the Public Works Division of the City of Artesia, CA. The salary is $29.22 per hour, and the work schedule is Monday through Thursday, from 5:30 am to 10:30 am.
Under the general supervision of a Department Manager, this position performs a variety of maintenance, ground keeping, and construction tasks in the City.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, repairing and maintaining physical structures belonging to the City, cleaning and keeping the buildings in good repair, using hand tools and power tools. This also includes replacing defective electrical switches and other fixtures; performing minor painting, plumbing, and carpentry tasks such as painting structures, and repairing woodwork with carpenter's tools, repairing plumbing fixtures, repairing plaster and laying brick, building sheds and other outbuildings.
Additionally, the role involves maintaining grounds and areas along street right-of-ways of the city. The incumbent may also repair and paint benches, handrails, and tables. They will inspect streets, alleys and sidewalks throughout the City. They may clean grounds and remove litter, grooms recreational areas, spray lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides, using hand or automatic sprayer.
They may rake and bag or burn leaves. They may water lawn and shrubs, using hose or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler system. They may repair fences, gates, walls, and walks, using carpentry and masonry tools. They may paint fences and outbuildings. They may perform ground maintenance duties, using tractor equipped with attachments, such as mowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, and lawn roller.
They may cut lawns, using hand mower or power mower, trim and edge around walks and walls using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools. They may prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs, using shears, pruners or chain saw. They may clean buildings and keep them in good repair, performing minor painting, plumbing, and carpentry tasks.
They perform other duties as assigned relating to maintenance and repair of City facilities.
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance related to City maintenance is required. This includes a high school education or equivalent, and two (2) years of semi-skilled to skilled experience in maintenance, general construction and/or custodial work. Experience in public works and maintenance environment is highly desirable. A valid California Driver's License issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record are required.
Essential skills and knowledge include knowing safe driving practices, having a basic knowledge of carpentry, electricity, and plumbing, and having a basic knowledge of lawn care and tree trimming. Essential mental/physical functions include maintaining stamina over time, managing time pressure and deadlines, maintaining attention and concentration for necessary periods, applying common sense understanding and carrying out instructions, adapting to situations requiring the precise attainment of set limits, tolerances, or standards, performing simple and repetitive tasks, asking questions or requesting assistance when needed, performing routine, concrete, organized activities, remembering locations and work procedures, making decisions based on simple sensory data, performing work activities requiring supervision or speaking with others, and physical activities such as bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, walking, squatting, getting in and out of vehicles without assistance, and lifting objects weighing up to 60 pounds to waist height.
Pre-employment requirements include successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. The position has a 365-day probationary period, as outlined in the employee handbook. The examination process may include screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience; scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application; written examination(s); qualifications appraisal oral examination;
performance examination; or technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process. Oral interviews are planned for Monday, July 20, 2026.
