Process Design Engineer
PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE:PBF) is one of the largest independent refiners in North America, operating oil refineries and related facilities through its subsidiaries. We are seeking a Process Design Engineer to join our team at Chalmette Refinery, Chalmette, LA.
Job SummaryThe experienced Process Design Engineer (PDE) provides process engineering design and project support for multidisciplinary projects across all refinery units, managing concepts from inception to capital funding approval and commissioning.
The role involves development, analysis, optimization, and implementation of refinery processes and systems. The PDE supports the Capital Projects group in guiding process and project design, unit troubleshooting, process improvements, site safety and environmental groups, and may assume additional responsibilities as needed.
Key Responsibilities- 1. Project Development
- Support the Project Team with engineering requirements, process design input, technical reviews, scope definition, and alignment with standards.
- Identify and evaluate capital and optimization projects aligned with safety, environmental, and economic goals.
- Collaborate with business, technical, and project resources to advance initiatives.
- 2. Process Design, Engineering & Optimization
- Perform equipment sizing and specification (pumps, heat exchangers, columns, reactors, piping, etc.).
- Evaluate existing processes for performance improvements, yield enhancement, energy efficiency, and cost reduction.
- Research and assess technologies to improve unit operations and develop site‑specific plans.
- Support FEED and detailed engineering phases.
- Develop and optimize process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and heat and material balances.
- 3. Standards Compliance & Process Safety
- Lead multidisciplinary reviews of project designs addressing safety, environmental compliance, reliability, operability, constructability, and cost estimation.
- Ensure compliance with PBF’s capital project best practices and industry standards.
- Participate in PHAs, HAZOPs, safety reviews.
- Perform Safety Relief Reviews (SRRs) and maintain the PSPPM database.
- Ensure designs comply with regulatory and environmental standards.
- 4. Execution Support & Field Coordination
- Interface with construction and project teams during construction, commissioning, and startup.
- Provide field verification and troubleshooting support to ensure accurate implementation.
- Support area process engineers during unit turnarounds, including confined space entry and inspections.
- 5. Collaboration, Mentoring & Knowledge Sharing
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, reliability, safety, and environmental teams.
- Mentor process engineers.
- Collaborate on revisions and updates of engineering practices and lessons learned.
- Active participation in the site’s Loss Prevention System (LPS) tools.
- Support best practice networks as needed.
- 6. Digital Tools & Communication
- Utilize digital tools (PI System, Seeq) for monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization.
- Support process modeling efforts.
- Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations.
- Utilize Aspen HYSYS and other simulation tools for model development, tuning, and maintenance.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering (required).
- Master’s degree in an engineering field (preferred).
- 6–10 years of experience in refining, petrochemical or engineering firms.
- Project experience in a refinery or chemical plant environment.
- Strong knowledge of API, ASME and other design standards.
- Experience with Siemens PSPPM software (desirable).
- Proficiency in process simulation tools (Aspen HYSYS, PRO/II).
- Familiarity with process safety methodologies and Safety Relief Review.
- Experience with P&/PFD development, equipment sizing, and capital project execution.
- Leadership ability in multidisciplinary reviews and mentorship.
- Strong communication skills for cross‑functional teams.
- Willingness to support field activities, turnarounds, and confined space entry.
