Material Handler
The Material Handler plays a key role in warehouse operations by safely loading and unloading containers, moving materials throughout the facility, and preparing shipments for outbound delivery. This position involves both forklift operation and manual material handling, including working on scissor lifts, breaking cement blocks with a sledgehammer, and climbing on and around machinery and equipment. Approximately 20% of the work is performed on lifts and 80% off lifts, requiring strong attention to safety, detail, and physical stamina.
Responsibilities- Load, unload, and move materials within the warehouse, plant yard, and worksite using forklifts, scissor lifts, and manual handling methods.
- Open ocean containers using bolt cutters or appropriate hand tools as directed by warehouse leadership.
- Receive and store production materials in designated warehouse locations, ensuring proper placement and organization.
- Scan all incoming receipts and verify counts against packing slips to ensure accuracy of inventory records.
- Load materials onto and from pallet racks and other shipping devices in accordance with warehouse procedures.
- Select and pick production for outbound customer shipments using a computerized order selection sheet.
- Stage selected product for order verification, ensuring the correct items and quantities are prepared for shipment.
- Load outbound shipments onto designated motor carriers for delivery, following all loading and safety guidelines.
- Properly strap, chain, and secure cargo to comply with DOT Cargo Securement Regulations and prevent damage or loss.
- Inspect products received into the warehouse for transit or loading damage and report any issues to appropriate personnel.
- Perform daily visual inspections of assigned forklift equipment prior to the start of each shift, checking fluids, leaks, tires, forks, and safety equipment.
- Complete and submit forklift inspection reports for review, and promptly report any defects so repairs can be scheduled with maintenance or outside vendors.
- Use RF scanning equipment and warehouse inventory systems to track and manage materials accurately.
- Drive and operate scissor lifts as required for loading, unloading, and accessing elevated areas safely.
- Use a sledgehammer to break cement blocks and perform related manual material handling tasks as needed.
- Climb over machines and repeatedly get on and off lifts to access materials and equipment, following all safety protocols.
- Follow verbal and written work instructions issued by warehouse supervisors and adhere to established operational procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper use of personal protective equipment such as steel-toe footwear and safety glasses.
- Support shipping and receiving activities, including preparing materials for outbound shipments and assisting with general warehouse operations.
- Previous forklift operating experience in a warehouse environment.
- Experience working in third-party logistics (3PL) or similar distribution and warehousing operations.
- Demonstrated warehousing experience, including material handling, shipping, and receiving.
- Ability to read and follow work orders, computerized order selection sheets, and verbal instructions.
- Capability to use RF scanners and basic warehouse inventory systems for tracking and verification.
- Strong understanding of safe material handling practices, including proper cargo securement in line with DOT regulations.
- Physical ability to climb on and off lifts, work around machinery, and perform manual tasks such as breaking cement blocks.
- Attention to detail when verifying counts against packing slips and inspecting products for damage.
- Commitment to performing thorough daily equipment inspections and reporting defects promptly.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with ocean containers and using bolt cutters or hand tools to open them.
- Familiarity with pallet racking systems and different types of shipping devices.
- Comfort operating scissor lifts in a warehouse or yard environment.
- Ability to work effectively with supervisors and team members in a fast-paced warehouse setting.
- Reliability in adhering to scheduled shift hours and meeting operational deadlines.
- Basic understanding of warehouse safety practices, including use of personal protective equipment and safe climbing and lifting techniques.
