Medical Director, Digestive Health Institute

Carle Health and the Carle Illinois College of Medicine seek an accomplished Gastroenterologist and Physician-Scientist to serve as Medical Director of the Digestive Health Institute (DHI). Reporting jointly to the Chief Medical Officer of Carle Health and the Dean of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, this leader will shape the strategic, clinical, academic, and research vision for digestive health across an integrated health system serving more than 1.5 million people throughout Illinois.

This unique joint appointment offers substantial protected time for leadership, program development, research, and scholarship. The Medical Director will lead growth across clinical operations, faculty recruitment, academic advancement, and regional expansion while building a nationally recognized digestive health program that integrates patient care, education, innovation, and translational research.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Carle Health and Carle Illinois leadership to expand gastroenterology services, strengthen subspecialty programs, and advance research at the intersection of medicine, engineering, artificial intelligence, and data science. Opportunities for collaboration include the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign, the Beckman Institute, National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), Grainger College of Engineering, and the Cancer Center at Illinois.

• Provide physician leadership for gastroenterology and colon & rectal surgery services across Carle Health.
• Oversee clinical quality, patient experience, operations, and program growth.
• Recruit, mentor, and develop gastroenterology faculty and advanced practice providers.
• Lead development of subspecialty services, regional outreach, and integrated care pathways.
• Strengthen collaboration with oncology and surgical services to advance comprehensive GI cancer programs.
• Expand clinical research, translational science, and medical education programs.
• Advance AI and data‑driven innovation to improve digestive health care delivery.
• Support medical student, resident, and fellow education.
• Partner with institutional leadership and philanthropy to support strategic growth and investment.

• MD or DO with board certification in Gastroenterology.
• Completion of accredited residency and fellowship training.
• Minimum of 10 years of clinical GI practice and 5 years of progressive physician leadership, or comparable national academic leadership experience.
• Demonstrated success leading a digestive health program, clinical service line, or academic division.
• Experience in quality improvement, program development, and academic medicine.
• Record of scholarly achievement; extramural research funding and academic rank of Associate Professor or higher are preferred.
• Experience with in an integrated healthcare system preferred.
• MBA, MHA, MHCDS, or equivalent leadership experience welcomed but not required.
• Eligible for Illinois medical licensure.
