Job Overview

A teacher at The High School of St. Thomas More leads students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and psychological growth by helping them learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible Christian men and women. Each teacher is also involved in the House System, which seeks to enhance our mission by emphasizing the integral formation of the whole person.

Teachers are involved in the formation of the students by serving as a mentor teacher. This position is specifically looking for someone to teach High School English classes.

Personal, Religious and Professional Development
  • Takes part in the professional and religious activities provided by the Office of Catholic Education of the Diocese of Peoria and in retreats and workshops offered at The High School of Saint Thomas More
  • Participates in other meetings, activities or opportunities for personal, religious or professional development
  • Keeps abreast of trends, developments, and research as they pertain to education and school operation by attending workshops and conferences, reading professional books and periodicals, and taking formal courses.
Instruction
  • Implements by instruction and action the philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives of The High School of Saint Thomas More and the Catholic Diocese of Peoria
  • Prepares course maps and syllabi for each course taught and makes copies available for the administration and the students
  • Keeps class lists, seating charts, textbooks, and daily or weekly lesson plans available in the classroom for use by a substitute in case of an unexpected absence
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning by developing reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and by maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to meet the individual needs of the students
Student Assessment
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students
Institutional Functions
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials
  • Accepts a share of responsibility for extracurricular activities
Other
  • Submits measurable personal and professional goals to the Principal at the beginning of each school year
  • Meets performance recommendations set forth in teacher evaluation
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings and school functions and serves on staff committees as required
  • Attends graduation as required

Qualifications Profile
  • Certification/License:
    • Illinois State Certification as an English Teacher
  • Education:
    • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Experience:
    • Successful student-teaching experience for the appropriate grade level.
