Electrical Technician

The Engineering Technician supports engineering and manufacturing operations by performing routine testing, troubleshooting, and equipment check‑out activities. Working from schematics, diagrams, written instructions, and defined plans, this role assists engineers in developing, modifying, and validating products, processes, and test equipment. The Engineering Technician uses a variety of diagnostic, test, and measurement tools to ensure accurate results and effective problem resolution.

Responsibilities
  • Perform testing, checkout, and troubleshooting tasks using schematics, diagrams, verbal instructions, and technical documentation. Identify routine malfunctions and assist in determining corrective actions.
  • Assist engineers in the design, modification, and evaluation of products, processes, and test equipment.
  • Conduct tests, collect data, and maintain accurate records to support engineering analysis and decision‑making.
  • Follow all established procedures and safety guidelines to ensure accurate test results, equipment protection, and a safe work environment.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support operational and engineering goals.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency in electrical circuits, soldering, micrometers, and using an oscilloscope.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Solid technical aptitude and familiarity with diagnostic / test equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, and test programs.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Highly detail‑oriented with strong organizational skills.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate degree or two‑year technical/trade degree preferred.
  • Equivalent technical experience may be considered.
  • 1–2 years of hands‑on experience in a testing, engineering support, or technical environment.
Work Environment

The role is based in a unique and hands‑on lab within the research park, surrounded by the University of Illinois environment. Training and support are provided through a peer‑based model, with day‑to‑day task guidance and prioritization led by a Technician Team Lead. There is exposure to multiple team members for broader knowledge sharing, with an emphasis on building independence once trained.

Pay range: $21.00 – $31.25 per hour.
