Position Overview

This job posting is for our Experienced/Lateral Police Officer Program. The City has authorized a temporary hiring incentive program for experienced police officers.

Job Responsibilities
  • Police Officers protect life and property by enforcing city ordinances and Illinois law.
  • Perform special details, specific assignments, patrol city streets, assist fellow officers and agencies.
  • Respond to public needs, conduct investigations, problem‑solve, follow up on leads, obtain evidence, deter criminal activity.
  • Compile reports, prepare cases for trial, appear in court, maintain records.
Required Qualifications
  • U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States (must meet I‑9 requirements)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Applicant must be 21 years of age by hire date
  • Completion of a probationary period as a police officer in the U.S.
  • Good standing with current or prior department
  • Substantially equivalent skills and abilities to a City of Champaign post‑probationary officer, as determined by the Chief of Police
