The University of Illinois Department of Speech and Hearing Science (SHS) () invites applications for a full‑time, 12‑month, non‑tenure track position as a Clinical Assistant Professor, with opportunities for advancement. Individuals with demonstrated, extensive specialization in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and experience supporting individuals with complex communication profiles and low‑incidence disabilities, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing, are encouraged to apply.

Individuals skilled in implementing alternative access methods such as eye gaze, switch scanning, and partner‑assisted strategies, as well as tailoring AAC systems to complement auditory technologies and enhance multimodal communication across the lifespan are sought, prioritizing pediatric populations. The position emphasizes evidence‑based assessment, personalized system design, individualized interventions, and interdisciplinary collaboration to create meaningful, functional communication across environments.

Provide clinical education to students in the clinical M.A. program for speech‑language pathology; develop a clinical caseload focused on AAC, community outreach and engagement, and direct service; and contribute to departmental service. The candidate may also coordinate/supervise services provided through school‑based contracts within public and private schools, serve as the SHS university supervisor for full‑time school placements, and contribute to college and university service.

Opportunities will also exist for academic instruction and to collaborate in clinical research.

Applicants must hold a graduate degree and clinical certification in speech‑language pathology (CCC‑SLP) from the American Speech‑Language‑Hearing Association (ASHA). Applicants must also hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (‑Educator‑License.aspx), a current Illinois Speech‑Language Pathology license, and meet the 2020 ASHA certification standards for providing clinical instruction and supervision to individuals preparing for ASHA certification by the start date. Previous experience with clinical education of graduate students is required.

Priority will be given to individuals with experience in creating collaborative clinical programming.

Speech and Hearing Science (SHS) is a state and national leader in clinical education and research and a highly collegial and collaborative department, situated in the College of Applied Health Sciences on the main campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana‑Champaign and includes (a) the recently renovated Speech and Hearing Science building that houses academic, research, and collaborative spaces; (b) the Audiology & Speech‑Language Pathology Clinic;

and (c) the Collaboration Lab that houses clinical faculty offices, a classroom, multiple study spaces for clinical graduate students, and private spaces for tele‑practice. The department offers an undergraduate degree and three graduate degrees—M.A., Au.D., and Ph.D. Its mission is to engage in research, education, and outreach activities that enhance communication across the lifespan, integrating research and clinical applications from the biological, behavioral, and social sciences.
