Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Overview

As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor with the North Central Health District’s WIC program, you will support WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in the Macon‑Bibb Health Department, providing education, counseling, and resources to promote successful breastfeeding.

• Give basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including benefits, barrier resolution, and initiation.
• Maintain a caseload of WIC mothers and make routine periodic contact via phone, home or hospital visits.
• Attend breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor.
• Conduct counseling by telephone, home visits, or hospital visits at scheduled intervals.
• Provide additional support outside the clinic schedule for mothers with breastfeeding problems.
• Maintain confidentiality of mother information.
• Keep accurate records of all contacts.
• Refer mothers to relevant professionals and community resources per clinic protocols.
• Attend prenatal classes, breastfeeding support groups, staff meetings, conferences, and workshops as required.
• Read assigned breastfeeding materials.
• Assist WIC staff in promoting peer counseling through special projects and duties.
• Travel to the district’s 13 county health departments to provide counseling services as needed.

• Has breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months (past or present).
• Has been or is currently a WIC participant.
• Has a cell phone and is willing to be on call and accept phone calls at home and after hours.
• Has dependable transportation to support consistent and reliable attendance in this role.

• Bilingual (English/Spanish).
