Job Description & How to Apply Below

Butterfield Park District is looking for a hands-on digital marketer and storyteller to lead how we connect with our community online. This is a doer role, not a strategy-only role: you will write the copy, publish the pages, schedule the posts, and read the analytics yourself. Our goal is simple, help more residents discover and love our programs, and tell the story of a park district that serves its community well.

A signature early project will be leading a website platform migration to a modern hosted CMS (Squarespace) — restructuring our content, preserving our search rankings, and giving residents a site that is easier to use. Day to day, you will keep our website and social channels fresh, capture and share visual stories from our programs and parks, and work within our Active Net registration system to support enrollment and communications.

We're a small, community focused organization. The right person is comfortable owning the whole workflow, works well independently, and genuinely enjoys making a public institution feel welcoming.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Own our website content on Squarespace — write, edit, publish, and keep it current and accurate
  • Lead our website platform migration — restructure content, map and preserve URLs and redirects, and protect our SEO through the transition to a modern hosted CMS with outside technical support
  • Capture and produce visual stories — shoot and edit photos and short videos of programs, events, and our parks, and turn them into content that feels real and engaging
  • Be on site when things are happening — attend select programs, events, and seasonal moments (including some evenings and weekends) to capture content firsthand
  • Build and maintain a photo and video library — so the District has organized, ready to use visual assets season to season
  • Tell our story across social media — turn program information into posts, short videos, and carousels that residents actually want to read and share
  • Promote programs and drive registrations — coordinate email and program promotion through Active Net and Squarespace's built in tools; work within our registration system to support enrollment and customer service
  • Apply practical, everyday SEO — page titles, headings, descriptions, and keyword aware writing that helps people find us
  • Keep our content accessible and on-brand — write accessible content (including alt text and video captions) and maintain a consistent, warm brand voice across every channel
  • Track what's working — use site and social analytics to see what drives participation, and adjust
  • Support seasonal program communications — including our program guide as it evolves toward a more digital-first format
Qualifications

We care more about what you can demonstrate than about a checklist of tools. Strong candidates will show us:

  • A portfolio of live work — websites you've built or maintained, social content, writing samples, and photo/video you've captured or edited. (This is required. See "

    How to Apply

    .")
  • Hands on CMS experience — Squarespace strongly preferred; experience migrating a site from one platform to another is a significant plus
  • Excellent, warm, clear writing — especially the ability to turn dry program details into stories people connect with
  • Visual storytelling skills — comfortable shooting and editing photos and short video for social (phone or basic gear is fine) using tools like Canva, Cap Cut, or Lightroom. We're looking for clean, engaging content, not studio production
  • Practical SEO experience — not theory; things you've actually done to improve visibility
  • Comfort with analytics — you can look at the numbers and make a decision
  • Design competence — Adobe, or similar, enough to produce clean social graphics and simple collateral
  • Sound judgment around media consent — awareness of photo/video release requirements, especially when children are involved, and what can and cannot be published
  • Familiarity with recreation or registration software — Active Net a plus
  • Independence and organization — you can manage several things at once with light oversight
  • A portfolio or links to live work — websites, social accounts, writing samples, and photo or video you…
