Job Description
Be a part of a world‑class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as our Lactation Consultant at our Comer Children’s Hospital
. The Lactation Consultant, Registry is a member of the nursing staff who influences quality patient care in the area of lactation and breastfeeding through an integral role as clinician, educator and consultant.
- Act as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team and consult with physicians, pharmacists, and other appropriate individuals as necessary to serve as a direct resource to breastfeeding mothers and babies.
- Act as a Lactation Consultant in areas of expertise, collaborating with the mother, the primary nurse and physician in the management of lactation and breastfeeding.
- Assist the primary nurse in formulating a nursing care plan for establishment of lactation and breastfeeding.
- Collaborate with all members of the health care team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate lactation and breastfeeding problems and suggest treatment approaches and outcomes.
- Develop, evaluate and revise policies and procedures related to lactation and breastfeeding.
- Monitor and evaluate hospital practices that promote or impede lactation and breastfeeding.
- Respond to requests for information concerning lactation and breastfeeding from outside the medical center as time allows.
- Participate in all aspects of evaluation, acquisition, maintenance, repair, rental, sale, and instruction in the use of all products related to lactation and breastfeeding.
- Generate quality improvement statements and evaluate achievement of goals in the area of lactation and breastfeeding.
- Collaborate with OB/Ped leadership in the development of programs.
- Active Registered Professional Nurse licensure in Illinois.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree required;
Master’s Degree (MSN) preferred. - Three years of clinical nursing experience in either Pediatric or Obstetrics in a tertiary or large community center.
- One or more years of Lactation Consultant experience.
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Certification or Certification Eligibility.
- Registry, 0.30 FTE.
- Shift: Nights, 7:00 pm – 7:00 am, every other weekend required.

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position. The pay range is based on a full‑time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed annually. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity.
Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
