A summer research assistant is needed at the US Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in NW Champaign to conduct research optimizing plant and algae chloroplast extraction and increasing survival in extracellular environments.
Duties include:
following numerous published methods and modifying as necessary; formulating reagents; conducting multiple variations of homogenization, centrifugation, and filtration; staining and visualizing isolates using fluorescence and confocal microscopy; data collection, entry, and analyses; and other duties associated with this research.
Essential skills include: ability to follow directions and work independently, proficiency in preparing precise solutions and buffers, desire and ability to learn new laboratory techniques and use diverse pieces of equipment, ability to clean up after yourself and maintain a clean laboratory workspace, attention to detail, ability to get along with others, and interest in and desire to learn more about the research being conducted.
Knowledge of plant and cellular biology and laboratory experience are required. Prior experience with organelle isolation is a plus. Position could potentially extend beyond the summer through the 2026-27 school year or longer depending on outcomes. Hours are negotiable. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply. Compensation is competitive and based on experience.
