Responsibilities
  • Assists in the preparation of breads, desserts, and pastry items for residential dining all-you-care-to-eat, retail venues, and/or catering.
  • Assists in the maintenance of proper sanitation techniques and practices.
  • Assists in the standardization of recipes and quality control of the products.
  • Recommends improvements in food preparation methods to obtain better products.
  • May assist in ordering food and supplies in accordance with established procedures.
  • Practices good public relations with students, guests, and university personnel.
  • Assists in preparing recommendations for improvements in operating procedures necessary to maintain efficient services and good customer relations.
  • Supervises staff or lower rank employees as assigned.
  • As requested, may serve food.
  • Provide culinary training and insight for special dietary requirements.
  • Assists in the review of products and services with consideration to the budget.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Physical Demands:
Position works in a kitchen area which is heated by ovens and stoves. Position involves remaining stationary and may involve relocating or transporting.

Working Conditions:

The work is performed in an Industrial Kitchen where there is some discomfort in low temperature areas (-10 degrees

F) and/or high temperature areas (90 degrees

F). There is risk involved when working with dangerous machinery, wet floors, and exposure to open flames.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any combination totaling one (1) year (12 months) from the categories below:
  • College coursework in the culinary arts field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • Vocational training in the culinary arts field, such as an apprenticeship.
  • Skilled work experience (such as an Assistant Chef or Culinary Worker IV) in large-scale cooking in a variety of food areas (meats, baking, desserts, salads, sauces, etc.) and in a variety of international cuisines (European, American, Asian, etc.) that provided a knowledge of food science, food service management, food sanitation, and the culinary arts and their practice.

Note:

As required by the position to be filled, possession of the ANSI-accredited Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) or per PA 100-0194 and/or PA 100-0954, a valid Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification (FSSMC).

Rate of Pay

The rate of pay for Extra Help Assistant Pastry Chef - Dining Services, University Housing positions start at $25.01 per hour and increases based on level of work. The rate of pay is determined by the job description submitted by the department.

Work Schedule

We offer short or long-term assignments up to 900 hours, which is about 6-months of full-time work. Employees can work either full or partial days and full or partial weeks.

Extra Help

Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within units. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Extra Help employees do not receive holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.

Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with the University of Illinois, including your position on and Civil Service register.
