We are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join our team at Achen-Gardner Construction. The successful candidate will lead the estimating process from start to finish, including the preparation of detailed cost estimates and bid proposals for construction projects. They will work closely with other departments and stakeholders to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
Responsibilities- Reviews estimates and revisions for completeness and accuracy.
- Reviews construction documents and understands scope of work to bid.
- Prepares cost analysis by recapitulating material, labor, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead costs in heavy civil projects.
- Executes take-offs of construction documents.
- Inputs take-offs data into estimating software.
- Utilizes the company approved costing methodology, data, and systems to present estimate results in a detailed breakdown format suitable for use by the project manager and the project team.
- Attends client pre‑bid meetings, visits job sites, and keeps a record of all verbal information received from the client during the pre‑bid meeting.
- Prepares project cost estimates from the client’s RFQ documents or bid packages.
- Sources and incorporates all relevant submissions required into the bid package for submission.
- Generates proposals and incorporates the necessary notes and exclusions.
- Explains details behind each estimate, including the basis of the man‑hours allocated for each task and the personnel resources needed to execute each task.
- Maintains cost estimating tools including databases, spreadsheets, and other computer‑based applications to keep updated information on past performance and industry standards.
- Coordinates estimate handoff on successful pursuits.
- Organizes all relevant estimate information and leads handoff meetings to pass all relevant information to the operations team.
- Maintains lines of communication between company departments, project manager, and client with regards to cost estimating activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or adequate work experience.
- 10+ years of experience in construction estimating.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
- Experience with government contracts and compliance is a plus.
- Proficiency in estimating software such as HCSS Heavy Bid, On‑Screen Takeoff, or similar software.
- Experience and capability of estimating municipal work within the public right‑of‑way, underground utilities such as water and sewer lines, asphalt paving, concrete flatwork, concrete structures, earthwork, and large subcontractor packages.
