POSITION SUMMARY:
The Underground Leadman assists the Underground Foreman in supervising and coordinating the work of the underground crew while gaining the skills and experience necessary for future advancement to a Foreman role. This position plays a key role in ensuring safety, quality, and productivity on the job site.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Underground Foreman in overseeing daily operations and ensuring safety protocols are followed at all times
- Provide direction and guidance to crew members to ensure efficient and quality work
- Perform daily site walkthroughs to verify proper materials, tools, and equipment usage
- Work closely with the Foreman to resolve on-site issues or conflicts
- Monitor progress and maintain communication to ensure tasks meet project schedules
- Track and record daily work quantities and submit reports as needed
- Assist in daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and participate in weekly Toolbox Talks
- Ensure trenches are excavated, shored, or sloped according to safety standards and specifications
- Coordinate equipment and material needs with the Foreman and Dispatch
- Serve as a point of contact for crew members and provide mentorship and support
- Perform hands-on work alongside the crew as needed
- Continuously develop skills in underground utility installation, leadership, and project management
- Perform other duties as assigned by site supervision
REQUIRED
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
- Solid understanding of underground sewer, water, and storm drain installation
- Knowledge of trench safety, OSHA standards, and confined space procedures
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to motivate a team
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to learn and grow into a Foreman role
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED required
- 5+ years of underground utility construction experience
- At least 2 years in a leadership or mentoring role preferred
- Familiarity with MAG (Maricopa Association of Governments) specifications preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat and dust
- Regular exposure to construction site hazards and moving equipment
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds
- Strong manual dexterity and coordination to operate tools and equipment
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods
