Job Summary

The Fireproofing Field Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and providing technical oversight of passive fire protection (PFP) systems installed on the project. The role ensures fireproofing work is executed in accordance with project specifications, fire protection requirements, quality standards, and construction schedules. The Fireproofing Field Engineer serves as the primary technical interface between engineering, construction, quality, subcontractors, and project management for fireproofing scope and supports planning, inspection, turnover, and issue resolution throughout project execution.

Responsibilities

Technical Execution

  • Interprets fireproofing specifications, passive fire protection requirements, UL listings, fire resistance ratings, and manufacturer installation requirements.
  • Reviews fireproofing scope for constructability, installation sequencing, access requirements, and field execution feasibility.
  • Supports resolution of technical issues, field changes, RFIs, and fireproofing-related nonconformances.
  • Ensures fireproofing systems are installed in accordance with project specifications, approved designs, and applicable codes and standards.

Planning and Work Packaging

  • Supports development of construction work packages and field execution plans for fireproofing activities.
  • Coordinates fireproofing scope with structural steel, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and commissioning activities.
  • Identifies and removes constraints impacting fireproofing readiness, including access, scaffolding, weather protection, material availability, and preceding work completion.
  • Participates in look‑ahead planning and workface readiness reviews.

Quality Management

  • Verifies substrate preparation, material storage, environmental conditions, application methods, thickness requirements, and final acceptance criteria.
  • Coordinates inspections and testing activities including thickness verification, adhesion testing, density testing, and visual inspections as required.
  • Ensures inspection records, quality documentation, and turnover packages are complete and accurate.
  • Supports NCR resolution, corrective actions, and punch list closure.

Progress and Performance Management

  • Tracks installed quantities, productivity, and progress against project plans.
  • Supports forecasting of labor requirements, material needs, and installation durations.
  • Monitors subcontractor performance and identifies risks to schedule, quality, or productivity.
  • Provides accurate reporting of fireproofing progress, issues, and forecasted completion dates.

Coordination and Stakeholder Management

  • Coordinates daily with construction supervision, subcontractors, quality personnel, field engineering, and project management.
  • Supports mechanical completion, turnover, commissioning, and occupancy readiness activities.
  • Participates in walkdowns, readiness reviews, turnover inspections, and client acceptance activities.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Required bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong knowledge of passive fire protection systems including cementitious fireproofing, intumescent coatings, fire stopping systems, and specialty fire-resistant assemblies.
  • Understanding of fire resistance ratings, UL assemblies, tested systems, and code compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards and codes including UL, ASTM, NFPA, ICC, IBC, and project-specific fire protection requirements.
  • Ability to interpret fireproofing specifications, construction drawings, vendor documentation, and inspection requirements.
