Summary
The Architectural Drafter’s focus in a design team is the creation and development of construction documents. This will require the Drafter to coordinate heavily with their Designer to complete the goal.
Essential FunctionsAs a Drafter in a design team your personal skills will allow you to coordinate effectively with your Designer and others. During design you are a crucial part of the design team, your professionalism and experience is relied on to complete projects. Your Project Architect and Discipline lead depends on you for:
- As-builds
- Field observations
- File creation in Industrial Designs authoring format
- Sheet creation
- Block/family creation
- Annotations
- Plotting
- Communication and coordination with other disciplines
- Following design standards (text height, annotation standards, view usage etc.)
- Maintaining proper file housekeeping (i.e. layers, view allocations, phase allocation etc.)
- Picking up redline corrections from your Project Architect.
The day-to-day responsibilities will require task coordination with your Project Architect. Your Architect will coordinate with you on content for plans, sections, elevations, and details to accomplish the design intent. It should be understood, to develop construction documents there will be several changes and iteration until the overall design intent is achieved. As design progresses you may be asked to participate by your Project Manager or Discipline lead in:
- Client coordination meetings (i.e. workgroup meetings)
- Internal coordination meetings
- Discipline coordination meetings
- Meeting minute notation
- Design reviews
Although these are not your direct responsibilities it is up to your Project Engineer and discipline lead if your participation is required. Sometimes these duties can lead to beneficial information to develop your project, but they are not always critical for your progression.
Construction AdministrationDuring the construction phase of a project. Our completed package is given to a general contractor to onboard trades for construction. During this phase of a project, we will receive Request for Information (RFI) and Submittals (verification of items being purchased per spec). These are mainly the responsibilities of your designer based on the impact these items will have on construction.
An incorrect RFI or submittal could exponentially affect a project and should be taken as seriously as design. Your main responsibilities during this are to:
- Revise the package based on RFI response.
- Rev cloud and triangles
- Update models
- Convert construction as builds into our design documents for record set (red to black)
- As-builds
While going through the construction phase of a project, you may be asked by your designer to assist in the following items:
- Coordinate with other disciplines based on changes.
- Attend field walks.
- Attending Owner/Architect/Contractor (OAC) meetings.
Participation in these tasks are per the direction of your Project Architect and are the responsibility of your Project Architect to verify they are completed properly.
